What is a senior DevOps engineer?

Senior DevOps Engineers are experienced IT professionals who bridge the gap between software development and IT operations. They are responsible for automating processes, managing infrastructure, optimizing deployment pipelines, and ensuring system reliability and scalability. Their role often involves collaborating with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to streamline workflows, implement best practices, and enhance the speed and quality of software delivery. Senior DevOps Engineers typically have strong skills in cloud platforms, scripting, CI/CD tools, and monitoring solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior DevOps engineer?

To thrive as a Senior DevOps Engineer, you need deep expertise in software development, systems administration, automation, and cloud infrastructure, typically supported by a relevant degree and several years of hands-on experience. Proficiency with tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Terraform, AWS/Azure/GCP, and CI/CD pipelines, along with certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, is common. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills are essential for coordinating across development and operations teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable, and efficient delivery of software in complex, fast-paced environments.

What are some typical challenges senior DevOps engineers face when optimizing CI/CD pipelines, and how can they address them?

Senior DevOps Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex dependencies, ensuring pipeline reliability, and balancing speed with security. Addressing these issues involves implementing automated testing, using containerization tools like Docker to standardize environments, and collaborating closely with development and QA teams to quickly identify and resolve bottlenecks. Regularly reviewing and refining pipeline processes, as well as staying updated on the latest DevOps tools and best practices, can help maintain an efficient and secure deployment workflow.

Job description

Gabb gives families a better choice for their kids' first technology. Our product portfolio spans purpose-built
hardware alongside digital services. Everything we build is designed to let families introduce technology in steps,
giving kids connection without the harms of a fully open smartphone. We're a fast-growing, mission-driven
company headquartered in Lehi, Utah, with a team that genuinely loves what we do and why we do it.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Gabb is seeking an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer to help build, scale, and operate our
infrastructure. This is a hands-on individual contributor role for someone who thrives on solving hard
infrastructure problems and wants to make a direct, technical impact without people-management
responsibilities.
You will contribute to infrastructure reliability, CI/CD, observability, incident response, and cost
management, working closely with the Lead DevOps Engineer and the broader engineering team while
reporting to the Director of Platform and Infrastructure. This role is deeply hands-on and includes
participating in on-call and actively debugging production issues.
You'll partner closely with engineering and product teams to support business needs, focusing on
execution, reliability, and continuous improvement.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
INFRASTRUCTURE & RELIABILITY
โ€ข Support infrastructure reliability and uptime across all environments - development, staging, and
production
โ€ข Design and implement scalable, resilient systems on AWS that support continued customer and
device growth
โ€ข Help manage multi-regional or highly available infrastructure with clear SLAs, failover patterns,
and capacity planning
Gabb โ€ข Lehi, Utah โ€ข gabb.com
Identify and remediate security risks in infrastructure and deployment pipelines in partnership
with engineering and security teams
CI/CD & DEVELOPER PLATFORM
โ€ข Build and maintain CI/CD systems and GitOps workflows that enable product teams to deploy with
speed and confidence
โ€ข Improve developer tooling, deployment pipelines, and environment management to reduce
operational burden on product engineering teams
โ€ข Manage Kubernetes and containerized workloads; apply infrastructure-as-code practices using
Terraform, Helm, and related tooling
OBSERVABILITY & INCIDENT RESPONSE
โ€ข Build and enhance observability practices - monitoring, logging, tracing, and alerting - that
provide clear visibility into system health, performance, and risk
โ€ข Participate in on-call rotations and incident response, including root cause analysis and post-
incident improvement processes
โ€ข Contribute to reporting and dashboards on infrastructure health, performance trends, and cost
SYSTEMS, PROCESSES & OPERATIONAL MATURITY
โ€ข Contribute to the infrastructure and platform roadmap aligned with company growth and product
needs
โ€ข Build and maintain operational processes, runbooks, and documentation that increase reliability,
consistency, and knowledge transfer across the team
โ€ข Support infrastructure cost management - build visibility into cloud spend, identify waste, and
align resource usage with business goals
โ€ข Support new product initiatives with scalable platform solutions, ensuring DevOps considerations
are embedded early in architecture decisions
COLLABORATION & MENTORSHIP
โ€ข Mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers on infrastructure and DevOps best
practices
โ€ข Collaborate with engineering, product, and the Lead DevOps Engineer to translate business needs
into technical initiatives and priorities
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
โ€ข 4+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering
โ€ข Demonstrated track record of building or significantly maturing DevOps practices - not just
operating within an established one
โ€ข Experience operating and scaling systems to millions of users or connected devices
Gabb โ€ข Lehi, Utah โ€ข gabb.com
Strong experience with AWS and cloud-based infrastructure at production scale
โ€ข Experience with Kubernetes and containerized workloads in production environments
โ€ข Proficiency in infrastructure as code (Terraform, Helm) and CI/CD pipeline design (GitOps
workflows preferred)
โ€ข Strong command of observability practices: metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting systems
โ€ข Experience supporting multi-regional or highly available production systems with defined SLAs
โ€ข Experience with infrastructure cost optimization - not just monitoring spend, but actively
managing it
WHO YOU ARE
โ€ข A builder - you assess what exists, identify what's working and what isn't, and construct the
systems and processes needed to operate at the next level
โ€ข A strong communicator who can translate infrastructure risk and technical trade-offs into clear
language for technical and non-technical stakeholders alike
โ€ข Disciplined about process without being rigid - you build frameworks that create consistency
while leaving room for the team to move fast
โ€ข Comfortable with ambiguity and ownership in a fast-moving environment where the infrastructure
roadmap will evolve as the business grows
โ€ข Genuinely interested in Gabb's mission and the responsibility that comes with building
infrastructure for a product families depend on
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT HERE
Mission-driven company protecting kids and making a real difference for families
Competitive compensation commensurate with experience
Generous insurance coverage (up to 100% of premiums based on tenure)
401(k) with employer match
Unlimited PTO and flexible scheduling where the role allows
Stock options
Pet insurance
An energetic, collaborative culture - and the best coworkers around
