What is a senior automation engineer?

The duties of a senior automation engineer are to develop, design, and configure systems that automate processes, such as manufacturing or software processes. Some people in this position work exclusively with software design while others work with hardware design and production. Some may provide both digital and physical solutions to automation problems. Regardless of the field, the responsibilities of a senior automation engineer are to improve efficiency while reducing the number of people it takes to complete a given process. Qualifications typically include a bachelor’s or master’s degree, experience in the industry, and leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Automation Engineer, you need a deep understanding of automation frameworks, scripting languages (such as Python or Java), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like Selenium, Jenkins, Docker, and CI/CD systems, along with certifications like ISTQB or Certified Automation Professional (CAP), is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, effective communication, and collaboration skills help you excel in guiding teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of automated systems in fast-paced technical environments.

How does a senior automation engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale projects?

Senior Automation Engineers frequently work alongside software developers, QA specialists, and operations teams to design and implement robust automated testing frameworks or process automation solutions. They often lead discussions to identify automation opportunities, define requirements, and ensure that automation integrates smoothly into existing workflows. Effective communication and documentation skills are essential, as they must translate complex technical needs for non-technical stakeholders and align efforts across departments. Collaboration may also involve mentoring junior engineers and conducting code reviews to maintain high standards and consistency.

Job description

Job Title: Senior QA Automation Engineer (TypeScript)
Location: Boca Raton, FL - 33432
Duration: Permanent / Fulltime
Schedule: Onsite

Job Description:
We're looking for a Senior QA Automation Engineer who doesn't just run tests you build the testing infrastructure. You'll own quality end-to-end across Web, Mobile (iOS and Android), and Desktop (Windows and Mac), designing automation frameworks from the ground up and driving a Shift-Left quality strategy that catches issues before they reach staging.
This is a high-impact role where you'll shape how we think about quality, mentor engineers, and have direct influence on the products our users experience daily.
What You'll Do

  • Build automation frameworks from scratch in TypeScript using Playwright (Web) and Appium (Mobile), with the ability to integrate UI, API, and database validation into cohesive end-to-end test suites
  • Own the QA strategy design test plans, establish coverage standards, and drive Shift-Left testing practices that reduce defects before they hit staging
  • Write and maintain automation scripts in TypeScript this is your primary language, not a nice-to-have
  • Test across platforms validate application behavior across iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS, including device-level testing, log analysis, and environment-specific validation
  • Debug at every layer use tools like RestAssured, Charles Proxy, ADB, Android Studio, Xcode diagnostics, and Web Inspector to perform cross-layer root cause analysis
  • Drive performance testing using JMeter for high-traffic, real-world scenarios
  • Validate data integrity using SQL across Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL
  • Mentor and elevate coach team members on test design, automation patterns, defect lifecycle, and continuous quality practices
  • Manage test operations build traceability and reporting workflows using tools like TestRail, Jira, or equivalent
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with developers, product, and design teams to clarify requirements, identify gaps, and ensure comprehensive test coverage

What You Bring

  • 5+ years in QA automation with a focus on building frameworks, not just writing scripts within existing ones
  • TypeScript expertise you've built production automation frameworks in TypeScript, not just maintained them
  • Playwright experience hands-on framework design and implementation for modern browser automation
  • Mobile testing proficiency Appium or equivalent across iOS and Android, including real device testing and debugging
  • Cross-platform testing experience Web, iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac
  • Strong SQL skills for backend data validation
  • API testing experience with RestAssured, Postman, or similar tools
  • CI/CD integration experience embedding automated test suites into Jenkins or equivalent pipelines
  • Performance testing experience with JMeter or LoadRunner
  • Shift-Left mindset you proactively identify requirement gaps and quality risks before code is written
  • Leadership ability you've mentored QA engineers and driven quality culture within a team

Bonus Points

  • Experience building QA organizations or processes from zero
  • BDD experience with Cucumber/Gherkin
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted QA workflows
  • Background in gaming, entertainment, or high-engagement consumer products
  • Java automation experience alongside TypeScript
