Job description

Senior Software Engineer (Back-End)

Tempe, Arizona | Full-Time | Four Days Onsite

Company Overview

Harnham is partnering with a leading U.S. real estate organization specializing in the ownership and management of single-family rental homes.

Unlike traditional apartment operators, the company acquires individual homes, renovates them, and leases them to families and individuals. Its operations span the full residential property lifecycle, including property acquisition, renovation, leasing, property management, maintenance, resident services, and vendor coordination.

The organization is one of the largest owners and operators of single-family rental homes in the United States, managing tens of thousands of properties across more than 30 metropolitan markets. It also provides property management services on behalf of institutional real estate investors.

Data and technology are central to how the company operates at scale. Its engineering platforms support digital leasing, mobile and web applications, customer and resident portals, property maintenance, internal operational workflows, vendor integrations, procurement, payment processes, and resident services.

The technology organization continues to invest in cloud-native platforms, API-driven applications, mobile capabilities, automation, artificial intelligence, and the modernization of customer-facing and internal systems.

Position Overview

The Senior Software Engineer will design, build, and deliver scalable services and customer experiences using cloud-native technologies within Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The position is approximately 80% back-end and 20% front-end development, with a primary focus on serverless architecture, microservices, API development, system integrations, and production delivery.

The engineering team supports mobile applications, customer-facing portals, public websites, internal operational systems, external vendor integrations, and procure-to-pay platforms.

Engineers work closely with architects, business leaders, product partners, and other developers to translate business requirements into secure, reliable, and scalable technical solutions.

Successful candidates will bring recent, hands-on ownership of production AWS serverless systems and must be prepared to explain their architectural decisions, technical tradeoffs, observability strategy, and resulting business impact. General AWS familiarity without substantive serverless delivery experience will not meet the requirements of this position.

Work Authorization Notice

The employer does not provide employment sponsorship or immigration support now or at any time in the future.

Applicants must have permanent, unrestricted authorization to work in the United States for any employer. Candidates who currently require or may later require visa sponsorship, transfer, extension, conversion, or employment authorization support are not eligible for consideration.

The restriction includes, but is not limited to, H-1B sponsorship or transfer, F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, STEM OPT, H-4 or H-4 EAD, TN, O-1, E-3, student visa employment authorization, or any other temporary or employer-dependent work authorization.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, and deploy highly scalable, cloud-native services within AWS

• Develop production serverless applications and microservices using AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, Step Functions, Secrets Manager, and related AWS services

• Design and deliver REST APIs supporting mobile applications, customer-facing platforms, internal systems, public websites, and external vendor integrations

• Develop back-end solutions using Node.js, Python, TypeScript, and JavaScript

• Contribute to front-end development using React, React Native, and GraphQL as required

• Partner with architects and senior engineers on solution design, system architecture, platform standards, and technical roadmaps

• Collaborate directly with business stakeholders to gather requirements, communicate progress, recommend solutions, and translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences

• Ensure technical decisions support broader business objectives, engineering priorities, platform standards, and long-term maintainability

• Evaluate competing technical approaches, communicate tradeoffs, and help engineering teams reach sound architectural decisions

• Lead technical workstreams and provide technical direction throughout the software development lifecycle

• Conduct code reviews, promote development standards, and mentor junior engineers

• Develop proof-of-concept solutions to evaluate new technologies, architectures, and platform capabilities

• Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve engineering productivity, testing, documentation, and solution delivery

• Support the refactoring and re-architecting of existing applications and services

• Identify opportunities to create reusable components and reduce duplicate development efforts across projects

• Support automated testing, user acceptance testing, production deployments, and post-release validation

• Coordinate with business partners to gather feedback from pre-release testers and address issues before production release

• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and support secure, repeatable deployment processes

• Establish appropriate logging, monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and operational metrics to measure engineering outcomes, support production stability, and accelerate troubleshooting

• Document technical designs, solution blueprints, architecture decisions, tradeoffs, risks, issues, and operational procedures

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field

• Minimum of five years of professional software development experience, with six to eight years strongly preferred

• Recent hands-on experience building and supporting production applications, services, or integrations within a U.S.-based business environment

• Demonstrated experience designing, building, deploying, and supporting AWS serverless applications and microservices in production

• Production experience with AWS Lambda and related services such as DynamoDB, S3, SQS, Step Functions, or Secrets Manager

• Strong development experience with Node.js or Python, along with TypeScript and JavaScript

• Experience designing and delivering REST APIs, public APIs, and complex system integrations

• Strong understanding of microservices architecture, distributed systems, system design, event-driven architecture, and integration patterns

• Hands-on experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, build processes, and production deployments

• Experience with tools and technologies such as GitHub, Bitbucket, Jenkins, Docker, containers, or infrastructure-as-code platforms

• Experience implementing production logging, monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting practices

• Experience contributing to both back-end and front-end application development

• Demonstrated experience leading technical projects, conducting code reviews, or mentoring junior engineers

• Ability to evaluate technical alternatives, explain architectural tradeoffs, and contribute constructively when engineering opinions differ

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience working directly with business stakeholders

• Ability to translate functional requirements into clear, scalable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions

• Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality software within established timelines

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with React, React Native, or GraphQL

• Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, or other container technologies

• Experience with CloudFormation, AWS CDK, AWS SAM, or Terraform

• Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools within the software development lifecycle

• Experience working within Agile software development environments

• Experience with Jira

• Experience integrating with Salesforce or other enterprise platforms

• Experience supporting customer-facing web or mobile applications at scale

Key Initiatives

The Senior Software Engineer will contribute to several priority technology initiatives, including:

• Greenfield platform and service development

• AI-enabled platform integrations

• Continued development of mobile applications

• Modernization and re-platforming of an API-driven public website

• Expansion of internal operational services and external vendor integrations

• Continued development of customer-facing digital experiences

The position is also eligible for a target annual performance bonus. The first-year bonus will be prorated based on the employee’s start date.

• Medical, dental, and vision coverage

• Parental leave

• 401(k) plan with company match

• Paid time off based on tenure

• Thirteen paid company holidays and one floating holiday
