What is a senior acoustic engineer?

Senior Acoustic Engineers are experienced professionals who specialize in the science of sound and vibration. They design, analyze, and improve acoustic environments in various settings, such as buildings, vehicles, studios, and public spaces. Their responsibilities often include noise control, sound insulation, and optimizing audio quality, as well as leading teams and managing complex projects. They typically collaborate with architects, engineers, and designers to ensure that sound requirements are met both technically and aesthetically.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior acoustic engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Acoustic Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of acoustics, sound measurement, and noise control, typically supported by a degree in acoustical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with simulation software (such as EASE or CadnaA), measurement tools, and relevant certifications like Institute of Acoustics (IOA) membership are common requirements. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering accurate acoustic analyses, effective client solutions, and successful project outcomes in diverse environments.

What are some common challenges faced by senior acoustic engineers in large-scale building projects?

Senior Acoustic Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing stringent acoustic requirements with architectural and budget constraints. They must collaborate closely with architects, builders, and mechanical engineers to ensure that sound control measures are effectively integrated without compromising the design or functionality of the space. Additionally, troubleshooting unexpected noise issues during construction or post-occupancy can require creative problem-solving and effective communication with multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Senior Acoustic Engineer vs Acoustic Consultant?

AspectSenior Acoustic EngineerAcoustic Consultant
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Acoustics or related field; certifications like ASASimilar credentials; often holds ASA certification
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and analyzing acoustic systems in labs or on-siteAdvising clients, conducting assessments, and providing acoustic solutions
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, constructionConsulting firms, architecture, environmental agencies

Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications. While Senior Acoustic Engineers focus on technical design and analysis within engineering environments, Acoustic Consultants primarily advise clients and conduct assessments. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in their focus—technical engineering versus consulting and client interaction.

Are senior acoustic engineers in demand?

Senior acoustic engineers are in demand due to the need for expertise in noise control, sound quality, and environmental acoustics across industries such as construction, manufacturing, and entertainment. They often require specialized skills, certifications, and experience with acoustic modeling tools, making their expertise valuable in various projects and environments.

How much does a Senior Acoustic Engineer make?

A Senior Acoustic Engineer typically earns between $80,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often work with specialized tools and may hold certifications in acoustics or related fields to advance their careers.

Our mission is to revolutionize underwater security, exploration, research, and operations through cutting-edge technology and unparalleled engineering. Our AUVs are defining the next generation of underwater autonomy
As a Senior Acoustic Signal Processing Engineer, you will join a fast paced and brilliant development team building the next generation of forward looking sonar systems for VATN underwater vehicles. You will be a key technical contributor to the foundational development of detection, classification, localization, and tracking (DCLT) algorithms. You will have the opportunity to test your algorithms and analysis products against realworld data often.
Your core responsibilities will include:
1. Algorithm development & refinement of existing algorithms for forward looking sonar products
  • System Hardening: Analyze realworld data to improve robustness against complex acoustic environments.
  • Algorithms Improvement: Propose and implement improvements to the homing system and target management framework to increase mission reliability. Develop automated data analysis pipelines from data collect to metrics reporting
  • DCLT Algorithm Implementation: Develop detection, classification, localization, and tracking algorithms

2. Implementation & Edge Optimization
  • Edge Deployment: Translate high-level algorithms into prototypes into efficient, real-time code optimized for deployment on embedded edge-compute hardware.

3. Modeling & performance validation
  • Support in-water development and in-water integration testing of the homing system
    • Work with key stakeholders - internal and external (government) - to translate mission CONOPS and requirements to robust testing programs to validate homing performance
  • Develop detailed sonar equation models of active and passive acoustic devices and systems for internal/external project support.

Preferred:
  • Prior engineering experience directly contributing to design or analysis of radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical signal processing, tracking algorithms, acoustic signal processing and machine learning
  • Working knowledge of machine learning techniques
