What does an Acoustic Engineer Intern do?

An Acoustic Engineer Intern assists in the design, analysis, and testing of sound and vibration systems in various environments such as buildings, vehicles, or studios. Their tasks often include conducting acoustic measurements, analyzing data, and helping to develop solutions to control noise and enhance sound quality. Interns may also work with specialized software and equipment under the supervision of experienced engineers. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to real-world acoustic engineering projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an Acoustic Engineer Intern?

As an Acoustic Engineer Intern, you can expect to support senior engineers in tasks such as conducting acoustic measurements, analyzing noise and vibration data, and assisting in the design and testing of soundproofing or audio systems. Your daily activities may include using specialized software to model acoustic environments, preparing technical reports, and participating in team meetings to collaborate on ongoing projects. Interns often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical engineers and architects, gaining valuable hands-on experience in both laboratory and real-world settings. This role provides a strong foundation for understanding the practical applications of acoustical principles and can lead to full-time opportunities upon successful completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Acoustic Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acoustic Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, typically with current enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. TECHLITE, a division of The Zippertubing Company, is a U.S.-owned manufacturer with more than 50 years of experience designing and producing high-performance acoustic panels and specialty insulation systems. We serve architectural, industrial, transportation, and commercial markets where sound control, thermal performance, and material innovation matter.

As a small, agile manufacturing organization, our team works closely across engineering, production, and customer-facing functions to deliver customized, performance-driven solutions. We value curiosity, collaboration, and hands-on problem solving.

TECHLITE is seeking an Acoustics Engineer to support the design, testing, and development of acoustic and insulation products. This role blends acoustic analysis, product development, materials science, and cross-functional collaboration, offering hands-on exposure to engineered-to-order solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the design and development of acoustic panels and insulation systems
  • Perform acoustic calculations and analysis related to sound absorption, transmission loss, and noise reduction
  • Assist in product testing, validation, and documentation
  • Interpret customer specifications and technical requirements
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs are practical, scalable, and cost-effective
  • Support prototype development and product improvement initiatives
  • Work with Sales and Business Development to help translate technical performance into customer-ready solutions
  • Contribute to technical documentation, reports, and product data sheets
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within engineering and production

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience in acoustics, materials engineering, or product development
  • Foundational understanding of:
    • Sound absorption and transmission principles
    • Acoustic measurement concepts (NRC, STC, etc.)
    • Materials behavior and performance
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with CAD software preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small-team manufacturing environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred (But Not Required)

  • Internship experience in architectural acoustics, manufacturing, or materials testing
  • Exposure to ASTM acoustic testing standards
  • Experience working in a production or lab environment

While performing the duties of this job, the Acoustics Engineer will perform most of the work in a multi-occupied office environment, with face-to-face customer interactions, and some work is performed on the production floor, near vibrating loud equipment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. At times the employee may be exposed to airborne particulates, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations on the production floor. The noise level can be loud at times.

This role is partially sedentary; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand on a step ladder as necessary during their shift. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The position involves sitting, talking, hearing, climbing stairs, using the elevator, and walking throughout the 8-10-hour shift. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate tools, drafting instruments, computers, printers, and various equipment.

This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. This individual will also be responsible for all other duties assigned by the department manager or executive management. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice. This classification for this role is exempt.
