What is a senior accountant?

A senior accountant oversees the accounting department for a company or organization. As a senior accountant, your responsibilities and duties include managing all incoming and outgoing payments and ensuring all ledgers are kept accurate and updated. You also conduct regular audits and supervise the other accountants, bookkeepers, and clerks in your department. To ensure the department runs smoothly, you train your staff thoroughly and monitor all transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Accountant, you need strong analytical abilities, advanced knowledge of accounting principles, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or finance, often accompanied by a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP software like SAP or Oracle, as well as advanced Excel skills, is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and supporting strategic business decisions.

What are some common challenges senior accountants face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Senior Accountants often oversee several projects or accounts at once, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Balancing deadlines for financial reporting, audits, and compliance tasks requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities. Job description

You Don’t Just Balance the Books. You Understand the Business Behind Them.

Senior Accountant | Team JCK

There’s a difference between processing accounting and truly understanding the numbers.

We’re looking for a Senior Accountant who notices when something doesn’t add up, and wants to know why.

Someone who appreciates a clean reconciliation, a well-supported journal entry, an organized close, and financial reporting people can actually rely on. You’re analytical, methodical, and detail-driven, but you also understand that behind every number is a business decision waiting to be made.

At Team JCK, you’ll join a growing, multi-brand restaurant organization where Accounting is more than a back-office function. Your work helps our Operations and leadership teams understand performance, identify opportunities, and make better decisions.

What You'll Own

As our Senior Accountant, you'll take meaningful ownership across the accounting cycle, including:

  • General ledger accounting and month-end/year-end closeJournal entries and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Inventory and fixed asset accounting
  • Payroll accounting and reconciliations
  • Financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Store-level sales, labor, food cost, and profitability analysis
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Audit support, internal controls, and GAAP compliance
  • Accounting SOPs, process improvement, and automation
  • Cross-functional partnership with Operations, Payroll, AP, Finance, and other teams

And because we're growing, you'll have opportunities to help us improve how the work gets done—strengthening processes, improving controls, supporting system enhancements, and building greater efficiency into our accounting operation.

You May Be Our Person If...

  • You’re the person who catches the discrepancy others missed.
  • You like structure, accuracy, and knowing the details are right. You don't need constant supervision to keep things moving—you take ownership of your work, follow through, and raise your hand when something doesn't make sense.
  • You can dig into the details without losing sight of what the numbers are telling us about the business.
  • And while you take accounting seriously, you believe great work can happen on a team that also values Leadership, Kindness, Fun, Service, and Teamwork.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting — required
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience — required
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP
  • Solid experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, financial statements, and month-end close
  • Strong Excel and accounting/ERP system skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Exceptional attention to detail and follow-through
  • Experience with multi-unit or restaurant accounting, inventory, fixed assets, payroll accounting, budgeting/forecasting, ERP systems, or external audit support is a definite plus.
  • Why Team JCK?

We're building something bigger than an accounting department.

We're building the systems, processes, and teams that will support the next chapter of a growing multi-brand organization—and we're looking for people who want to help us do it well.

If you love accurate numbers, strong processes, solving discrepancies, and understanding the story behind the financials, we'd like to meet you.

Bring us your accounting expertise. We'll give you a business worth digging into.
