Looking for a career that combines technical work, problem-solving, customer interaction, and time in the field? As a Project Design Technician I, you'll play an important role in helping SEMCO Energy plan and deliver natural gas infrastructure projects that serve communities across Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

In this role, you'll work closely with Engineering, Operations, contractors, municipalities, and customers to support projects from planning through construction. One day you may be coordinating infrastructure improvements, reviewing project costs, or assisting with permits and easements; the next, you'll be in the field staking new service locations, inspecting contractor work, or helping ensure projects meet company and regulatory standards.

The Project Design Technician I Will:

  • Prepare, coordinate, and maintain work orders and project cost estimates.

  • Keep construction databases updated with new services, projects, and related records.

  • Serve as a point of contact for customer and contractor questions, concerns, and requests, providing professional and timely support.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, special projects, and required training programs.

  • Stake proposed service and main locations to help ensure installations meet company standards and specifications.

  • Assist with project design activities, feasibility reviews, and customer inquiries related to new or existing projects.

  • Work with customers and municipalities to obtain easements, rights-of-way, and permits needed for construction projects.

  • Support Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) inspections and compliance activities.

  • Inspect and audit contractor work to help ensure safety, quality, and adherence to company standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED required.

  • Additional college coursework or vocational training in drafting, surveying, electrical systems, circuit wiring, or a related technical field is preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles is preferred.

  • Ability to successfully complete Operator Qualification (OQ) training after hire.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Customer service oriented with the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, customers, and management.

  • Working knowledge of business software applications used by the company and the ability to learn new systems as needed.

  • Commitment to maintaining a positive work environment, following established safety standards, and promptly reporting potential hazards.

  • Ability to adhere to company policies, business ethics standards, compliance requirements, and all applicable state and federal laws.

  • Qualified to operate a vehicle under the company's Safe Driving Policy.

  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day in all weather conditions and work in extreme heat and cold.

  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop, bend, crawl, kneel, walk, climb, push, pull, lift, and carry 20-50 lbs., as well as perform fine finger movements and reach above and below shoulder level.

  • Ability to work in outdoor environments with potential exposure to stinging insects and insecticides.

Compensation & Benefits:
