How much do seismic exploration jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for seismic exploration in the United States is $95,411.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $70,000.00 and $112,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Seismic Exploration job?

A Seismic Exploration job involves using seismic waves to map underground rock formations, primarily for oil, gas, and mineral exploration. Professionals in this field operate specialized equipment to generate and record seismic data, which is then analyzed to identify potential resource deposits. Roles include geophysicists, seismic technicians, and field crew members who work in various environments, from remote land sites to offshore locations. The job often requires knowledge of geology, physics, and data analysis, along with strong problem-solving skills.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in Seismic Exploration?

A typical day in Seismic Exploration often involves a mix of data collection in the field and analysis in an office setting. You might start the day reviewing seismic survey plans, then work with teams to deploy and monitor seismic equipment or interpret incoming data using specialized software. Collaboration with geologists, engineers, and project managers is common, as it ensures accurate results and safety standards are met. Flexibility is essential, as you may alternate between office-based analysis and remote fieldwork depending on project needs. This dynamic environment offers plenty of opportunities to develop technical skills and contribute to major energy and resource projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Seismic Exploration position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Seismic Exploration, you need a solid foundation in geophysics, geology, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in geoscience or a related field. Familiarity with seismic data acquisition tools, processing software (such as Petrel or Kingdom), and knowledge of industry-standard safety certifications are important. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating in field and office environments. These qualifications enable accurate interpretation of subsurface data and efficient project execution, which are crucial for successful resource exploration.

Job description

Role: Exploration Geophysicist / Seismic Interpretation Specialist
Our Vision: RigUp is where the best workers power the world's most successful projects. We are united by a common mission: to deliver services and technology that fundamentally change how skilled workers and the businesses they serve get hard work done.
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Exploration Geophysicist to support and enhance 2D, 3D, and borehole seismic acquisition and interpretation programs. This role is responsible for providing geophysical expertise to identify and evaluate exploration opportunities, generate prospects, and support drilling decisions through advanced seismic interpretation and subsurface analysis.
The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including geology, reservoir engineering, drilling, and external service providers to develop seismic acquisition strategies, interpret complex datasets, and deliver actionable recommendations that support exploration and development objectives.
This position requires strong technical expertise in seismic interpretation, prospect generation, petroleum systems analysis, and geoscience software applications.
Responsibilities
  • Support the planning, execution, and optimization of 2D, 3D, and borehole seismic acquisition programs.
  • Interpret seismic data to identify and evaluate exploration and appraisal opportunities.
  • Generate, mature, and rank exploration prospects and drilling targets.
  • Integrate seismic, geological, petrophysical, and well data to develop subsurface models and reduce exploration risk.
  • Perform structural and stratigraphic interpretation using modern geophysical workflows.
  • Evaluate exploration drilling opportunities utilizing seismic and other geophysical datasets.
  • Collaborate with geologists, engineers, and technical teams to support field development and exploration strategies.
  • Provide recommendations regarding seismic survey design, acquisition parameters, and processing requirements.
  • Conduct reservoir and petroleum systems evaluations to support prospect assessments.
  • Support formation evaluation and petrophysical analysis activities when required.
  • Present technical findings, prospect evaluations, and risk assessments to management and project teams.
  • Mentor junior geoscientists and contribute to technical development within the organization.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards during field and project activities.
  • Interface with contractors, vendors, and technical consultants to ensure successful project execution.

Skills & Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Geophysics, Geology, Geoscience, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience in exploration geophysics and seismic interpretation.
  • Strong understanding of 2D and 3D seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation workflows.
  • Proven ability to identify, mature, and evaluate exploration prospects.
  • Experience evaluating exploration and appraisal drilling opportunities.
  • Advanced geophysical interpretation and subsurface mapping skills.
  • Strong understanding of petroleum geology and hydrocarbon systems.
  • Experience integrating seismic, well, geological, and petrophysical datasets.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard geoscience software, including Petrel and related interpretation platforms.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and collaborate across technical functions.
  • Strong presentation, mentoring, and coaching abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with borehole seismic surveys and advanced seismic acquisition programs.
  • Formation evaluation and petrophysical analysis experience.
  • Advanced petrophysical analysis skills in siliciclastic reservoirs.
  • Experience supporting exploration programs from prospect generation through drilling and appraisal.
  • Knowledge of regional petroleum systems and basin analysis.
  • Experience with geoscience computing applications and data management tools.
  • Master's degree in Geophysics, Geology, or a related discipline.

Experience
  • Typically 5+ years of experience in exploration geophysics, seismic interpretation, or related subsurface disciplines.
  • Demonstrated success in prospect generation, evaluation, and hydrocarbon discovery programs.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary exploration and development teams.
