What is the difference between Seismic Developer vs Geophysical Software Engineer?

AspectSeismic DeveloperGeophysical Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Geophysics, Computer Science, or related field; experience with seismic data processingBachelor's or higher in Geophysics, Computer Science, or related; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentOil & gas companies, seismic data firms, geophysical service providersResearch institutions, oil & gas companies, geophysical software firms
Industry UsageDevelops seismic data processing tools, workflows, and applicationsDesigns and implements geophysical algorithms and software for seismic interpretation

Seismic Developers focus on creating software and tools for seismic data processing, often working within oil and gas industries. Geophysical Software Engineers also develop seismic-related software but may have a broader scope, including algorithm development and research. Both roles require similar credentials and work environments, but their specific focus areas differ slightly, with Seismic Developers more application-oriented and Geophysical Software Engineers more research-oriented.

Job description

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Engineering

Reports To: Engineering Manager

Location: Dublin, OH

Position Summary

Kinetics Noise Control is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support our Application Engineering team. This role plays a critical technical function in developing vibration isolation systems and engineered support solutions for commercial and industrial applications.

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for producing submittals and manufacturing drawings for vibration isolation systems, curbs, frames, and bases, as well as performing seismic and wind analysis on structural components and anchorage. This position also includes analytical modeling, finite element analysis (FEA), and direct collaboration with internal teams and customers.

The ideal candidate brings strong analytical capabilities, hands-on design experience, and the ability to independently solve complex engineering challenges in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and detail distribution system supports, restraints, anchors, and vibration isolation systems for piping, ductwork, and electrical (MEP) systems
  • Develop vibration isolation, curb, frame, and base submittals, including manufacturing drawings
  • Perform seismic and wind load calculations and produce supporting engineering reports
  • Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) using SolidWorks Simulation or similar tools
  • Execute analytical modeling and custom solution development based on project-specific requirements and field conditions
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Project Management, Manufacturing, and Field Teams to ensure practical, buildable solutions
  • Support Revit/BIM coordination for MEP systems and engineered supports
  • Review project documentation, identify missing inputs, and define engineering scope requirements
  • Provide technical support for field installations, shop fabrication issues, and customer inquiries
  • Generate custom product drawings based on project sales requirements
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering tools, internal software, standards, and workflows

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related discipline
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, structural frames, or product design
  • Experience with:
    • Autodesk design tools
    • SolidWorks Simulation or other FEA platforms
    • Excel, programming, or engineering automation tools
  • Demonstrated experience producing engineering calculations and technical reports

Technical Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Structural loading (seismic, wind, thermal)
    • Anchorage design and restraint behavior
    • Vibration isolation principles and system performance
  • Working knowledge of:
    • International Building Code (IBC) and related compliance requirements
    • Structural systems including steel, concrete, wood framing, and MEP components
    • Manufacturing processes including welding, sheet metal fabrication, tolerances, and finishes
    • Hardware selection, specification, and sourcing practices

Core Competencies
  • Advanced analytical problem-solving and sound mechanical design judgment
  • Strong technical communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with attention to deadlines
  • Effective collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver solutions for time-sensitive challenges

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions.
