What is a seed stage startup?

A seed stage startup is an early-phase company that is just beginning operations and is typically focused on developing its initial product or service. At this stage, the business is often seeking its first round of external funding, known as seed capital, to help validate its idea, build a prototype, and conduct market research. Seed stage startups usually have a small founding team and may not yet have significant revenue or a fully developed business model. The goal at this stage is to prove the concept and prepare for further investment and growth.

What are some common challenges of working at a seed stage startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a seed stage startup often means wearing multiple hats and adapting quickly to shifting priorities. Resources can be limited, which requires creativity and a willingness to learn new skills on the fly. Team members typically collaborate closely, and communication is key to navigating the fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment. Being proactive, flexible, and comfortable with uncertainty will help you thrive and make a strong impact as the startup grows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seed stage startup founder or early team member, and why are they important?

To thrive at a seed stage startup, you need a strong entrepreneurial mindset, versatility across business functions, and often relevant industry experience or technical expertise. Familiarity with tools like lean startup methodologies, project management platforms (e.g., Trello, Asana), and basic financial modeling is typically required. Exceptional resilience, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this dynamic environment. These abilities are vital for navigating uncertainty, driving growth, and rapidly iterating on ideas in the early, resource-constrained stages of a company.

Job description

New York City, NY (Times Square) · Hybrid (3 days in-office) · Full-time Compensation: $90,000 base + $90,000 variable ($180K OTE, 50/50), uncapped commission + competitive early-stage equity

About the Company

Our client is an AI-native platform democratizing access to college counseling — guidance historically reserved for families who could afford it. Roughly 74% of students never receive professional counseling support, and the client is changing that. For students, it's a free AI college counselor helping them navigate admissions, scholarships, and opportunities; for colleges and universities, it's a modern student-recruitment and enrollment platform with reach into an engaged, high-intent audience. Traction: 250K+ students across 190 countries, 25 institutional partners and growing, strong net revenue retention with zero logo churn, and a $2 blended CAC.

Industry: EdTech / AI

The Role

The client is hiring an Account Executive to own new-business acquisition across higher education, replacing its founding AE (who is moving into Head of Partnerships). A full-cycle role — sourcing, discovery, demo, negotiation, and close — as one of the first dedicated closers, with real influence on GTM. The motion: two SDRs generate outbound/inbound leads; the AE runs a first demo call and a second call focused on proposal and contract signing. Average sales cycle is under two weeks.

Requirements
  • Higher-education admissions or enrollment experience
  • Proven AE (not SDR) experience, ideally at a seed-stage startup with quantifiable results
  • NYC hybrid, 3 days in-office (Times Square)
Nice to Haves
  • Direct admissions or enrollment experience at a college or university, ideally in a leadership capacity
  • AE experience at a seed to Series A startup with a specific, quantifiable result
  • Genuine existing relationships across the admissions and enrollment world, which is small and tightly networked
  • A builder's mindset that thrives in an early-stage, fast-moving environment
  • A track record of consistently hitting or exceeding quota
Why Join
  • First dedicated closer with GTM influence, replacing the founding AE (moving into Head of Partnerships)
  • A fast, warm sales motion: two SDRs feed the pipeline, average cycle under two weeks, relationship-based selling in a tightly networked space
  • Backing, mission, and traction: venture-backed, selected for a major AI lab's startup program, 250K+ students across 190 countries, zero logo churn, $2 blended CAC
  • A strong package: $180K OTE (50/50), uncapped commission, competitive early-stage equity, platinum health coverage (100%, no deductible), 401(k), full visa sponsorship
Details
  • Location — New York City, NY (Times Square)
  • Work policy — Hybrid, 3 days in-office
  • Compensation — $90,000 base + $90,000 variable ($180K OTE, 50/50), uncapped commission + competitive early-stage equity
  • Visa sponsorship — Available (H-1B, O-1, OPT; full support)
  • Employment type — Full-time
