What is a security?

Securities are financial instruments that represent ownership in a corporation (stocks), a creditor relationship with a government or corporation (bonds), or rights to ownership as represented by options. They are commonly traded on financial markets and are used by companies and governments to raise capital. The most common types of securities include stocks, bonds, and derivatives. Securities are subject to regulation to protect investors and ensure fair and efficient markets.
