What is a second class power engineer?

Second Class Power Engineers are professionals who operate and maintain complex boiler and refrigeration systems in facilities such as power plants, manufacturing plants, and large buildings. They are responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of high-pressure boilers, turbines, and related equipment. Second Class certification is a mid-to-senior level qualification, requiring significant training, experience, and passing provincial or state exams. Their duties often include supervising lower-class engineers, performing inspections, troubleshooting equipment, and adhering to strict safety protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a second class power engineer?

To thrive as a Second Class Power Engineer, you need a solid understanding of thermodynamics, mechanical systems, and operational procedures, typically backed by a Second Class Power Engineer certification. Familiarity with control systems, boilers, turbines, and safety monitoring technologies is essential in this role. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help address emergencies and coordinate with team members. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operation of power plants and industrial equipment.

Connection is everything. It drives us to innovate, explore, and stay close to what matters to us most. At Bell, we're building a more connected future through world-class networks, AI-powered solutions, and digital experiences that elevate how people live, work, and play every day.

We believe in empowering people. That's why we equip our teams with cutting-edge technology, AI tools, and a collaborative environment that supports creativity and growth. Want to be part of a diverse team where your work makes a real impact? If you're inspired by innovation that advances how people connect and transforms what's possible, you belong on #TeamBell.

On the Bell Business Markets team, you'll be a vital part of making innovation happen for enterprise-scale customers. You'll deliver advanced solutions in areas such as IoT, Mobility/5G, Cloud, Cyber Security, Voice, Collaboration & Contact Centre and Internet & Private Networks.

At Bell, your skills and expertise will help set us apart as we continue to be the leading provider of digital connections and next generation services to businesses and governments.

Summary

Bell's AI Fabric initiative is pioneering a secure, sovereign AI compute network across Canada. This ambitious portfolio features seven large-scale, high-density data centers, anchored by a 500 MW B.C. supercluster and a 300 MW flagship site in Regina, Saskatchewan.

ย As Site Director, you will be the single accountable leader for an entire data centre site, owning end-to-end delivery and readiness-from construction and commissioning through to operational handover. Unlike a construction-only mandate, this role integrates every discipline on the ground (construction, engineering, commissioning, safety, contractors, and operational readiness) into one cohesive site P&L and outcome, ensuring the facility is delivered predictably, safely, and ready to support next-generation AI compute.ย ย

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the single point of accountability for the full site lifecycle-construction, commissioning, and operational readiness-for an assigned AI Fabric data centre.ย
  • Own site-level schedule, budget, and quality outcomes for a multi-hundred-million to multi-billion-dollar capital build, driving predictable, on-time delivery. ย ย
  • Lead and integrate all on-site functions and partners, including construction, engineering, commissioning, safety, and contractor/EPC teams, into one aligned delivery organization.ย
  • Direct contractor and vendor management, holding GC/EPC partners accountable to scope, cost, quality, safety, and milestone commitments.ย
  • Champion a zero-incident safety culture and ensure full compliance with occupational health & safety, environmental, and jurisdictional regulations.ย
  • Oversee integrated commissioning (Cx) and operational readiness, validating power, cooling, and resiliency systems to ensure a seamless handover to operations.ย
  • Partner cross-functionally with engineering, program controls, procurement & asset management, and operations to align site execution with design standards and capacity plans. ย
  • Manage change governance, risk, and issue resolution at the site level, escalating proactively to Capital Programs and AI Fabric leadership.ย
  • Provide executive-level site reporting on progress, risk, cost, and readiness to senior AI Fabric stakeholders.ย
  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing site leadership team as the national program scales.
Critical Qualifications
  • 15+ years leading large-scale capital programs, with direct experience owning hyperscale or mission-critical data centre sites (100MW+ / multi-billion-dollar portfolios preferred). ย
  • Proven track record as the senior accountable site leader across the full build-to-operate lifecycle, including construction, commissioning, and operational readiness.ย
  • Strong contractor and commercial governance experience, with credibility to manage GC/EPC partners and hold them to account.ย
  • Deep understanding of data centre systems-power, cooling (including high-density/liquid cooling), redundancy, and resiliency.ย
  • Expertise in commissioning and operational readiness processes, ensuring facilities are handover-ready.ย
  • Command of schedule and cost management tools (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project) and integrated master scheduling.ย
  • Demonstrated safety leadership and regulatory compliance on active, complex sites.ย
  • Exceptional executive presence and stakeholder management, able to influence senior engineering, contractor, finance, and executive leaders.ย
  • Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline; P.Eng., PMP, or equivalent certification an asset.ย
  • Willingness to relocate and/or be on-site full-time, with travel between Canadian build locations as the portfolio scales.ย

Adequate knowledge of French is required for positions in Quebec.ย
