Seasonal Software Developer information

What is a seasonal software developer?

A Seasonal Software Developer is a programmer who is hired for a specific period, often to meet increased workloads during peak business seasons or to work on short-term projects. These positions are typically temporary and may last for a few months, such as during the summer or holiday periods. Seasonal software developers perform many of the same duties as permanent developers, including writing code, debugging, and collaborating with a team. This role is ideal for students, recent graduates, or professionals seeking flexible work arrangements. Employers benefit from the ability to scale their development teams without long-term commitments.

What types of projects can a seasonal software developer expect to work on, and how is their work integrated with the rest of the development team?

As a Seasonal Software Developer, you will often be assigned to support ongoing projects that require additional development resources during peak periods, such as product launches or major updates. You may work on feature enhancements, bug fixes, or contribute to testing and documentation. While you may not lead major initiatives, you'll collaborate closely with full-time developers, participate in code reviews, and attend team meetings to ensure your work aligns with project goals. This structure offers valuable exposure to real-world development workflows and allows you to build technical and teamwork skills in a fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, understanding of software development fundamentals, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, coding languages such as Python or Java, and agile development tools are typically required. Adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication help you quickly integrate with new teams and manage shifting project priorities. These skills ensure you can deliver quality code efficiently during limited-term assignments, maximizing your impact within a short timeframe.

What is the difference between Seasonal Software Developer vs Part-Time Software Developer?

AspectSeasonal Software DeveloperPart-Time Software Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or related fieldSame as seasonal; often the same qualifications
Work EnvironmentTemporary projects during peak seasons, often in retail, e-commerce, or holiday-related industriesOngoing or flexible schedule, often in various industries
Employer UsageEmployers hire for specific seasonal needs, such as holiday sales or product launchesEmployers seek flexible staffing for ongoing or part-time roles
Search & Comparison IntentPeople compare seasonal roles with part-time to understand scheduling and project scope

Seasonal Software Developers work on short-term projects during peak seasons, often in retail or e-commerce, while Part-Time Software Developers have flexible schedules for ongoing or less-than-full-time roles. Both roles typically require similar qualifications but differ mainly in duration and project scope.

Is a seasonal software developer still in demand?

Seasonal software developers are still in demand, especially during peak project periods such as product launches or holiday seasons. Companies often seek temporary developers with skills in programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, and familiarity with development tools and version control systems. The demand depends on industry needs and project timelines, but technical skills remain valuable for temporary roles.

Job description

Join Amazon's CIA Orchestration and build the AI-powered tools that run Amazon's global network at scale. As an SDE II, you'll design and ship products that automate network infrastructure management across thousands of Amazon fulfillment centers worldwide, putting LLM technology directly in the hands of network engineers.
The CIA Orchestration team owns the orchestration layer of Imperium, enabling network operators to build auditable, pipeline-style workflows for provisioning, configuration, and device management without developer support. Its portfolio includes the Coffee Workflow System, Campaign Manager (global deployments), Andon Cord Service (deployment blocking), Network Guardrails (validation), Arabica (deployment ordering) etc

The team spans orchestration safety mechanisms, and speed, guided by tenets of security over availability, safety over speed, and customer-driven innovation.
Key job responsibilities
- You will design, build, and operate full-stack tools and AI-powered services used by network engineers across thousands of Amazon fulfillment centers globally.
- You will develop and evolve AI agents - leveraging large language models to automate complex operational workflows and reduce engineer toil.
- You will partner with Network Engineers, Systems Engineers, and Product Managers to translate real operational pain points into intuitive, scalable self-service solutions.
- You will contribute to a diverse product portfolio spanning web UIs, developer CLIs, authorization systems, and agentic platforms owning features end-to-end from design through production.
- You will mentor peers, participate in design reviews, and drive operational excellence through monitoring, runbooks, and continuous improvement of on-call practices.
We value simplicity, security, and scalability in our designs, and believe automation should be seamless to the engineers who rely on it every day.
A day in the life
Amazon offers a full range of benefits that support you and eligible family members, including domestic partners. Benefits can vary by location, the number of regularly scheduled hours you work, length of employment, and job status such as seasonal or temporary employment. The benefits that generally apply to regular, full-time employees include:
1

Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage
2. Maternity and Parental Leave Options
3. Paid Time Off (PTO)
4.

401(k) Plan
If you are not sure that every qualification on the list above describes you exactly, we'd still love to hear from you. At Amazon, we value people with unique backgrounds, experiences, and skillsets. If you're passionate about this role and want to make an impact on a global scale, please apply!
About the team
The CIA Orchestration Team builds the tools that keep Amazon's global network running safely and autonomously.

We own the orchestration layer of Imperium-the systems that let network operators build and run automated workflows to deploy, configure, and manage devices; roll out changes across thousands of sites at once; pause automation instantly when something looks risky; validate changes before they reach production; control deployment order and rollback; send alerts and cut tickets automatically; and safely test everything in simulated lab environments first. Our customers are the network engineers who rely on us daily. We move fast, fail closed, and believe great automation should be safe and effortless.
