What is a seasonal off grid?

Seasonal Off Grid jobs are temporary positions that require employees to work in remote locations without access to standard utilities like electricity, water, or internet. These jobs are often found in industries such as conservation, agriculture, outdoor recreation, or hospitality, where workers may live and work at campsites, lodges, or research stations. The roles can include guiding tours, maintaining facilities, farming, or assisting with environmental projects. They typically last for a specific season and may require adaptability, self-sufficiency, and a love of nature. People in these jobs often enjoy unique experiences and the chance to disconnect from modern conveniences.

What are some common challenges faced by seasonal off grid workers, and how can they prepare for them?

Seasonal Off Grid workers often face challenges such as adapting to remote locations, limited access to amenities, and unpredictable weather conditions. Preparing by packing appropriate gear, understanding the logistics of off-grid living, and developing basic self-sufficiency skills can make the transition smoother. Building strong communication with team members and being proactive about personal well-being are also important for a successful and rewarding season.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal off grid worker, and why are they important?

To excel as a Seasonal Off-Grid Worker, you need practical skills in basic maintenance, resource management, and often some experience in agriculture or outdoor labor, though formal qualifications may vary. Familiarity with solar power systems, generators, water filtration, and sometimes small machinery or hand tools is typically necessary. Adaptability, problem-solving, and strong self-motivation are essential soft skills for handling the unpredictability and isolation of off-grid environments. These abilities ensure safety, resource efficiency, and resilience in remote and challenging settings.

What is the difference between Seasonal Off Grid vs Seasonal Off Grid Maintenance Worker?

AspectSeasonal Off GridSeasonal Off Grid Maintenance Worker
CertificationsBasic electrical, safety, renewable energy certificationsElectrical, safety, renewable energy certifications
Work EnvironmentRemote, off-grid locations, renewable energy systemsRemote or on-site, maintaining off-grid systems
Employer & IndustryRenewable energy companies, eco-resorts, remote property ownersRenewable energy companies, maintenance service providers

Both roles involve working with renewable energy systems in remote settings. The Seasonal Off Grid typically focuses on installing and managing off-grid systems during specific seasons, while the Seasonal Off Grid Maintenance Worker specializes in maintaining and repairing these systems. The certifications and work environments overlap significantly, but the maintenance role emphasizes ongoing system upkeep.

Anchorage, Alaska - with travel throughout Alaska

Position Type: Full-Time | Experience Level: Experienced / Mid-Level or Above

About Susitna Energy Solutions

Susitna Energy Solutions is an Alaska-based renewable and off-grid energy company specializing in solar PV, battery storage, inverter systems, generators, heating solutions, and complete off-grid power systems. Our projects range from cabins and remote residences to commercial facilities and rural Alaska applications. The nature of our work requires employees who are technically capable, resourceful, highly organized, comfortable working independently, and able to adapt to changing project conditions.

We are seeking an experienced PV & Off-Grid Power Systems Technician who combines strong technical ability with excellent customer service, computer proficiency, organization, time management, and project coordination skills. This is not an entry-level position.

Position Overview

The PV & Off-Grid Power Systems Technician will support the design, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and technical support of solar PV, battery storage, inverter/charger, generator, and related off-grid energy systems. The ideal candidate can effectively manage their own workload, stay organized across multiple projects and customers, prioritize changing demands, and complete both field and administrative responsibilities without requiring constant oversight.

  • Solar and off-grid system design
  • Field installation, commissioning, service, and troubleshooting
  • Technical support and customer communication
  • Project coordination and job preparation
  • Computer-based programming, monitoring, and documentation
  • Scheduling, organization, prioritization, and follow-through

Solar PV & Off-Grid System Design
  • Evaluate customer electrical loads, usage patterns, site conditions, and energy requirements.
  • Design and size solar PV, battery storage, inverter/charger, charge controller, and generator-integrated systems.
  • Perform load calculations and energy-use assessments.
  • Size PV arrays, battery banks, inverter/chargers, charge controllers, conductors, overcurrent protection, and related balance-of-system components.
  • Understand and work with 12V, 24V, and 48V DC battery-based systems.
  • Interpret equipment specifications, wiring diagrams, manuals, and electrical drawings.
  • Develop system layouts, equipment lists, bills of materials, and project documentation.
  • Evaluate existing systems and recommend repairs, upgrades, or replacement options.
  • Design systems with consideration for Alaska's climate, seasonal solar resource, remote logistics, generator integration, and customer requirements.

Installation, Commissioning & Technical Service
  • Install, configure, commission, troubleshoot, and maintain solar PV and battery-based power systems.
Page Break
  • Work with PV modules, charge controllers, batteries, inverter/chargers, monitoring equipment, disconnects, breakers, communications equipment, and balance-of-system components.
  • Diagnose charging, battery, inverter, generator, communications, and system-performance issues.
  • Configure and program equipment according to manufacturer requirements and system design.
  • Verify proper system operation following installation, service, or equipment replacement.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and system inspections.
  • Maintain clean, safe, organized, and professional jobsites.
  • Accurately document system settings, changes, test results, equipment information, and work completed.

Organization, Time Management & Project Coordination

Exceptional organization and time-management skills are essential for this position. Our technicians frequently balance fieldwork, technical support, system design, customer communication, project preparation, documentation, and travel.

  • Manage and prioritize multiple active projects, service calls, customer requests, and technical issues.
  • Maintain an organized schedule and effectively manage daily and weekly priorities.
  • Complete assigned work within expected timelines and track open items through resolution.
  • Maintain accurate and timely customer, project, and service documentation.
  • Prepare for upcoming jobs by reviewing project information, equipment requirements, materials, tools, travel arrangements, and known technical concerns.
  • Create and maintain accurate material and equipment lists.
  • Communicate proactively when schedules, materials, technical issues, or project conditions may affect completion.
  • Coordinate effectively with administrative staff, technicians, customers, vendors, and manufacturers.
  • Balance urgent service needs with previously scheduled responsibilities.
  • Keep digital files, photographs, notes, system information, and customer records organized.
  • Complete documentation and administrative responsibilities promptly.
  • Work independently without requiring continual reminders or supervision and demonstrate strong follow-through and personal accountability.

Computer & Technology Skills

Strong computer proficiency is required. Modern solar and off-grid systems rely heavily on software for programming, monitoring, troubleshooting, documentation, system design, and project coordination.
