What is a seasonal nonprofit?

Seasonal nonprofit jobs are temporary positions within nonprofit organizations that are available during specific times of the year, such as holidays, summer, or fundraising seasons. These roles often involve event planning, outreach, administrative support, or working directly with communities to support special programs. They provide a great opportunity for individuals to gain experience in the nonprofit sector, contribute to a cause, and potentially transition to a permanent role. Seasonal nonprofit jobs can range from internships to project-based roles or temporary staff positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal nonprofit?

To thrive as a Seasonal Nonprofit Worker, you generally need strong organizational skills, basic administrative abilities, and a passion for the nonprofit's mission, with a high school diploma or relevant experience often required. Familiarity with donor management software, event planning tools, and office productivity suites like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace is valuable. Excellent communication, teamwork, and flexibility make someone stand out in this role, especially during busy campaign or event periods. These skills and qualities are essential for efficiently supporting nonprofit initiatives, fostering positive donor relations, and adapting to changing priorities during high-impact seasons.

What are some common challenges faced by team members in a seasonal nonprofit role and how can they be managed?

Team members in seasonal nonprofit roles often face the challenge of quickly adapting to fast-paced environments, as projects typically have tight deadlines and require immediate impact. Additionally, there may be limited time for training, so employees need to be proactive in seeking guidance and collaborating with colleagues. Open communication and flexibility are key to overcoming these challenges. Embracing teamwork and being willing to take on diverse tasks can help seasonal staff make the most of their experience and contribute meaningfully during their tenure.

Description:

About the Organization

TechTown is Wayne State University’s entrepreneurship hub. We empower Detroit-based startups and local businesses by providing resources, collaborative workspace and education for entrepreneurs that will further accelerate inclusive economic development across Detroit.

TechTown Ops+ is a full-service solution designed to alleviate the administrative burden for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits by offering expert HR, payroll, benefits administration, and finance/accounting support. Tailored for businesses at various growth stages, Ops+ handles essential back-end operations so owners can focus on strategic growth and innovation rather than paperwork.

About the Opportunity

TechTown Ops+ is seeking a detail-oriented, mission-driven Nonprofit Accountant to support our portfolio of nonprofit clients. This role is ideal for a professional who understands the unique financial landscape nonprofits operate in and thrives on helping mission-based organizations stay financially healthy, compliant, and accountable to their funders and boards. The Nonprofit Accountant will support nonprofit clients by managing financial records, preparing funder- and board-ready reports, ensuring regulatory and grant compliance, and serving as a trusted financial advisor to organizations advancing community impact. This role is primarily focused on supporting nonprofit clients, but may be required to support for-profit clients as well due to business needs.

The Impact You Will Make:

Client Support & Relationship Management

  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for assigned clients, responding promptly to inquiries and providing clear, professional guidance
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, understanding their financial needs and tailoring services accordingly
  • Provide proactive communication to help clients stay informed about financial deadlines, compliance requirements, and best practices

Nonprofit Client Support & Relationship Management

  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for assigned nonprofit clients, responding promptly to inquiries and providing clear, professional guidance grounded in nonprofit financial best practices.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with nonprofit clients, understanding their funding structures, mission priorities, and reporting obligations, and tailoring services accordingly.
  • Provide proactive communication to help clients stay ahead of grant reporting deadlines, funder compliance requirements, and board reporting cycles.

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate general ledger accounts and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements aligned with nonprofit financial reporting standards.
  • Manage fund accounting across multiple funding sources, maintaining clear tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds in compliance with nonprofit-specific financial requirements.
  • Track grant-specific fund usage and client awards, ensuring spending stays aligned with funder terms and restrictions.
  • Reconcile bank statements, accounts payable, and accounts receivable for nonprofit clients.
  • Process client invoices, payments, and expense reports with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management tailored to nonprofit funding cycles (e.g., grant timing, seasonal donation patterns).

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, nonprofit-specific accounting standards (including ASC 958), tax regulations (e.g., Form 990 readiness), and funder-imposed requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for nonprofit boards, funders, and other stakeholders, including grant-specific financial summaries.
  • Assist with nonprofit audits, ensuring documentation is organized, accessible, and audit-ready.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to nonprofit boards of directors, translating complex financial data, including fund balances and grant status into clear, accessible summaries for non-financial board members.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to streamline fund and grant accounting processes to improve accuracy and client experience.
  • Provide input on implementing accounting software and digital tools (e.g., grant tracking systems) to enhance efficiency for nonprofit clients.

Administrative

  • Maintain digital and physical filing systems for nonprofit client documentation, including grant agreements and funder correspondence.
  • Support client onboarding by organizing documentation, contracts, and initial setup steps specific to nonprofit financial structures.
  • Prepare internal reports, presentations, and summaries using data from various departments.
  • Track and follow up on grant reporting deadlines and other client deliverables using project management tools.
  • Maintain CRM and internal tracking systems to ensure data accuracy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

What You Will Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a professional services, nonprofit, or small-business setting

  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with financial reporting for nonprofit boards, funders, and audits
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple client accounts simultaneously
  • High degree of discretion and integrity in handling confidential information

Would be nice to have:
