What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Seasonal CPA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal CPA, you need a solid foundation in accounting principles, tax law, and financial reporting, typically backed by a CPA license and relevant experience. Proficiency with tax preparation software (such as Intuit ProConnect or Drake Tax), spreadsheets, and accounting systems is crucial. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help manage high workloads and client interactions during peak seasons. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely tax filings for clients under tight deadlines.

What are the typical work hours and workload expectations for a Seasonal CPA during tax season?

Seasonal CPAs often experience a significant increase in workload during tax season, with work hours commonly extending beyond the standard 40-hour week. It's not unusual to work evenings and weekends to meet client deadlines and filing requirements. While the pace can be intense, many firms provide a supportive team environment and resources to help manage the increased volume. After peak season, workloads typically decrease, offering more flexibility and potential time off.

What are Seasonal CPAs?

Seasonal CPAs are Certified Public Accountants who work primarily during certain busy periods of the year, most commonly tax season. They are often hired by accounting firms or businesses to help manage increased workloads, such as preparing tax returns or handling audits during tax time. While some seasonal CPAs work only a few months out of the year, others may have additional roles outside of tax season. This job is ideal for professionals seeking flexible or part-time work while leveraging their accounting expertise. Seasonal CPAs must still meet the same certification requirements as full-time CPAs.

What is the difference between Seasonal CPA vs Tax Preparer?

Seasonal CPAs are licensed professionals with advanced credentials, often working on complex tax issues during tax season. Tax preparers typically have less formal training and focus on basic tax filing services. While both roles are involved in tax work, CPAs handle more complex cases and have broader responsibilities.

Job description

This role is ideal for a CPA with deep experience supporting defined contribution retirement plans who enjoys client advisory work, technical problem-solving, and mentoring junior staff.

This position offers a fully remote work environment (with the ability to travel quarterly to IL), competitive compensation, and the opportunity to work closely with business owners and professional advisors on complex, high-impact retirement plan matters.

What You'll Do
  • Act as a subject-matter expert for employer-sponsored defined contribution plans (401(k), profit sharing, etc.)
  • Advise clients and advisors on plan design considerations, compliance requirements, and operational best practices
  • Analyze and explain quarterly retirement plan reports to trustees and key stakeholders
  • Support large-plan audits by preparing documentation and reviewing audit materials
  • Research and resolve advanced ERISA, IRS, and Department of Labor compliance issues
  • Review work completed by less experienced analysts and provide coaching and quality oversight
  • Balance multiple client deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and service

What We're Looking For
  • CPA designation (required)
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience with defined contribution plans, ideally within a Third‑Party Administrator (TPA) environment
  • Strong working knowledge of ERISA and retirement plan regulations
  • Experience supporting plan audits and trustee reporting
  • Proficiency with retirement plan administration software (Relius preferred)
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working directly with clients and advisors

Preferred (Not Required)
  • ASPPA credentials such as QKA or QPA
  • Experience mentoring or reviewing the work of junior staff
  • Background in client‑facing or consultative roles

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range: up to $100,000, depending on experience
  • Fully remote role with quarterly travel required to IL
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Company‑paid disability and life insurance
  • Retirement plan participation
  • ESOP
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Continuing education and professional development support
  • Unique benefits focused on long‑term financial wellness

Why This Role?

This is an opportunity to step into a true senior-level seat where your technical expertise, CPA credentials, and client-facing strengths are valued. If you enjoy strategic retirement plan work without the grind of constant travel or unpredictable hours, this role offers a strong balance of challenge, stability, and growth.
