About Us

Alaska Plastic Recovery, LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of PKS Consulting Inc., an Anchorage based company committed to sustainable resource recovery in Alaska. We operate the Municipality of Anchorage's residential plastics collection program at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on behalf of Solid Waste Services (SWS). Our mission is to divert post-consumer plastic waste from landfills and convert it into locally manufactured recycled products — keeping Alaska's plastics in Alaska.

This is a meaningful, community-facing role. You'll be the face of Anchorage's recycling program for hundreds of residents every week.

Position Summary

We are looking for a reliable, friendly, and detail-oriented individual to staff our plastics collection site at the Anchorage MRF for the 2026 season. As the on-site Collection Attendant, you will be the primary point of contact for Anchorage residents dropping off their recyclable plastics. You will inspect incoming material, ensure only accepted plastic types are collected, maintain a clean and organized site, and manage bagging and staging of collected material for transport.

This is a hands-on, outdoor position. The right candidate takes pride in doing a job well, enjoys working with the public, and understands that their daily work directly contributes to reducing waste in their community.

Key Responsibilities

• Greet and assist Anchorage residents arriving at the collection site with plastic recyclables
• Inspect incoming material to confirm accepted resin types (#1 PET, #2 HDPE, #5 PP) and reject non-conforming or contaminated items in a courteous and professional manner
• Educate contributors on accepted and non-accepted materials as needed
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the collection area throughout each shift
• Load accepted plastics into super sacks and manage staging of filled sacks for pickup
• Record daily visitor counts and material volumes accurately
• Report site issues, unusual material loads, or safety concerns to the supervisor promptly
• Open and close the collection site at the scheduled times each day
• Adhere to all MOA site rules and PKS operating procedures

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions typical of an Anchorage summer (including rain and wind)
• Physical capability to lift and move up to 50 lbs repeatedly throughout a shift
• Strong interpersonal skills — you will interact with dozens of community members daily
• Punctual, dependable, and self-directed; able to manage the site independently during shifts
• Basic recordkeeping ability (daily log entries, visitor counts)

Preferred:

• Prior customer service, retail, or public-facing work experience
• Interest in environmental sustainability, recycling, or waste reduction
• Familiarity with plastic resin identification codes (#1, #2, #5)
• Prior experience working at an outdoor facility or in a labor/materials handling role
• Valid Alaska driver's license

Working Conditions

This position is based entirely outdoors at the Anchorage Material Recovery Facility. You will be working at a municipal solid waste facility, which may involve exposure to dust, odors, and inclement weather. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided. The site operates rain or shine.

Physical requirements: Standing and walking for extended periods, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and operating hand trucks or pallet equipment as needed.

Schedule and Compensation

• Season: June 1 through October 31, 2026 (22 weeks)
• Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM (approximately 38 hours/week)
• Compensation: Competitive hourly rate, dependent on experience
• Overtime: Paid in accordance with Alaska law
• This is a seasonal position. Strong performers may be considered for rehire in future seasons.
