What is seasonal accounting?

Seasonal accounting refers to temporary accounting positions that are typically filled during peak financial periods, such as tax season or the end of the fiscal year. These roles may involve preparing tax returns, assisting with audits, reconciling accounts, or handling increased workloads during busy times. Seasonal accountants are often hired by firms or businesses that need extra help for a few months, and the work can provide valuable experience in accounting practices and processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, tax regulations, and relevant experience, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks or Excel and familiarity with tax preparation systems are typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and communication skills help you handle high workloads and client interactions efficiently. These abilities are critical to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting and compliance during busy periods like tax season.

What are some of the most common challenges faced in a seasonal accounting role, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Seasonal accounting roles often involve managing high workloads within tight deadlines, especially during tax season or fiscal year-end. Applicants should be prepared for fast-paced environments, frequent changes in priorities, and the need to quickly learn new software or procedures. Strong organizational skills, adaptability, and the ability to work well under pressure are essential. Proactively brushing up on current tax laws, relevant accounting software, and process workflows can help candidates hit the ground running and contribute effectively to the team.

Are you a Staff Accountant with recent, hands-on public accounting experience?

This opportunity is best suited for an accounting professional who is already preparing tax returns, contributing to audit or other attest engagements, and performing client bookkeeping responsibilities. • Manage multiple engagements and meet tax-season and client-service deadlines
Required Qualifications

  • One to three years of recent public accounting experience
  • Direct experience preparing tax returns—not solely assembling documents or entering basic information
  • Hands-on involvement in audit, review, compilation, or other attest engagements
  • Practical bookkeeping, general-ledger, reconciliation, and journal-entry experience
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Ability to explain previous responsibilities, work products, and level of independence clearly
  • Strong analytical, organizational, technology, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues and clients
Preferred Qualifications
  • Progress toward CPA licensure or CPA eligibility
  • Experience with CCH tax or engagement products
  • Experience serving multiple clients within a public accounting environment
Compensation and Benefits
  • Annual salary of $60,000–$75,000, based on relevant experience
  • Direct-hire, permanent employment
  • Health and disability insurance
  • 401(k) and profit-sharing plans
  • Generous paid time off
  • Flexible schedules and work arrangements
  • Fridays off during the summer
  • Direct access to experienced firm leadership
  • Collaborative, family-friendly, and professionally supportive environment
  • Long-term advancement opportunities
Seasonal Schedule Expectations
Candidates must be available to work approximately 55 hours per week during peak tax season, from February through April 15. Additional overtime may be required between September and October 15.

Who Will Be Most Successful
The strongest candidate will be able to discuss specific tax returns personally prepared, audit or attest procedures personally completed, bookkeeping clients independently supported, and the accounting systems used to perform that work.

This position is intended for someone who already possesses practical public accounting experience and is prepared to contribute shortly after joining the firm.

Qualified public accounting professionals are encouraged to apply promptly.
