Job description

OVERVIEW Kitsap County Parks department has a great opportunity to join their team full time for the summer. Work with our Parks Maintenance crew to become a part of sustaining great parks, open spaces, trails, events, and facilities for our community. Under supervision, the incumbent performs manual labor to maintain, improve, and protect Kitsap County parks, grounds, events and recreation facilities.

This is a seasonal position working through September 30, 2026. Preferred Education and Experience Six (6) months of manual labor, grounds maintenance, events or building maintenance experience. Experience working in federal, state or county parks.

Six (6) months experience in customer service. Driving Requirements The successful incumbent must meet the driving requirements of this position and submit a copy a current driving record/abstract (from state of residency) to review for eligibility to drive for Kitsap County prior to employment. The successful incumbent must obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy.

This position is categorized as: Category 1: Driver operates County-owned vehicle. Required Licenses, Certificates, Examinations/Tests and Other Requirements Please note: The incumbent is responsible for obtaining and maintaining all of the following required licenses, certifications and other requirements. Prior to employment, the successful candidate must: Pass all job-related examinations/tests necessary to demonstrate required knowledge, skills and abilities, as determined by the hiring authority at time of job posting.

Be 18 years of age. Authorize and complete a criminal background check. Information received is reviewed on a case-by-case basis and will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.

Pass driving abstract evaluation. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (May vary by position) Knowledge of general purpose tools, materials and chemicals Knowledge of safety and security precautions necessary and applicable in area of assignment Knowledge of ordinary lawn maintenance tools and equipment Skill in effective communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information, and to receive work direction Skill in customer service techniques Basic computer skills required to enter and extract information from automated systems and related software applications Skill in the operation of automotive vehicles and equipment requiring less than a commercial drivers' license Skill using two-way radios and/or traffic control techniques Skill in the safe handling and proper disposal of general purpose cleaning chemicals Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships Ability to work and stand outdoors for extended periods, under unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to learn and operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws or regulations.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and with other County employees. Ability to meet the assignment locations and travel requirements of the position.

Ability to cashier. Examples of Duties (May vary by position) Performs general ground maintenance on County right of ways, in parks or other property such as weeding, trimming, fertilizing, mowing, spraying, aerating, raking, shoveling, etc. Operates equipment and vehicles requiring minimal technical skill, such as riding and push mowers, line trimmers, backpack blowers, hedgers, chainsaws, golf carts, chippers, etc.

Use hand tools such as loppers, saws, pruners, shovels, rakes, etc. Performs operational checks and simple maintenance activities; reports needed repairs. Performs cleaning activities such as sweeping, mopping, stripping, sealing, waxing, buffing, and/or vacuuming.

Performs repairs to irrigation systems such as replacing broken supply lines and irrigation heads. Maintains artificial and natural turf athletic fields, sport courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, skate parks, and other recreational and support facilities. Provides assistance to public including responding to customer inquiries, explaining program rules and regulations, and assisting with maintenance of public safety.

Performs equipment set-up, tear down, and cleaning as needed for scheduled events. Performs custodial duties during events, including trash removal and bathroom cleaning as needed during scheduled events. Disposes of waste in a safe and appropriate manner; assesses waste category of materials to be disposed; places waste in appropriate containers for recycling; informs the public regarding proper recycling disposal areas.

Employs any and all protective equipment necessary to perform tasks when working with chemicals or in the disposal of waste. May perform cashiering duties. May be required to work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed OTHER POSITION RELATED INFORMATION Who May Apply: This position is open to the general public.
