Job description

The Meat & Seafood Department Manager oversees the meat and seafood operations of the store. The Department Manager is knowledgeable about different cuts of meat and types of seafood, manages inventory and supplies, and maintains a high standard of food safety and cleanliness. The Meat & Seafood Department Manager is responsible for training and supervising staff, ensuring exceptional customer service, and maximizing profitability.
Manage Department Operations:
  • Oversee daily operations of the meat and seafood department.
  • Ensure proper handling, cutting, packaging, and presentation of meat and seafood products.
  • Monitor inventory levels and order supplies to meet customer demand.
  • Maximize department profitability through effective cost control and pricing strategies.
  • Analyze sales trends and adjust inventory and pricing accordingly.
  • Monitor and achieve department budgetary goals.

Staff Supervision and Training:
  • Recruit, train, and supervise department staff.
  • Schedule staff shifts and manage labor costs effectively.
  • Provide coaching and development opportunities to enhance employee skills and performance.

Customer Service:
  • Ensure exceptional customer service by assisting customers with product selection and inquiries.
  • Address customer concerns and resolve issues promptly.
  • Uphold a friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the department.

Quality Control and Food Safety:
  • Ensure compliance with food safety standards and regulations.
  • Monitor product quality and freshness, rotating stock as necessary.
  • Implement procedures to minimize shrinkage and waste.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in accordance with health regulations.

Experience, Education & Certifications:
  • Proven experience as a butcher, meat cutter, or in a similar role within the meat and seafood industry, preferably in a retail environment.
  • 3-5 years managerial or supervisory experience.
  • Certification in meat cutting or butchery preferred.
  • Certification in food safety management.
  • Food Safety Certification required.
  • Additional certifications in meat cutting or butchery are a plus.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Expert knowledge of meat products, cuts, and preparation techniques.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in inventory management and financial analysis.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team effectively.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
  • Work in a cold environment, such as a refrigerated meat room.
  • Use sharp tools and heavy machinery, requiring attention to safety protocols.
  • Wear protective gear as required (e.g., gloves, aprons).
  • Prolonged standing & walking - up to 7 hours per day on your feet.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
