Summary of Position
Manage the operations and maintenance of the science laboratories for the purpose of providing a quality learning experience for students.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree from a US regionally or nationally accredited institution in a Biological, Chemical or closely related science field required.
One year experience using Biology lab equipment and preparation of laboratory experiments.
Knowledge Skills and Ability
- Ability to prepare and oversee weekly lab experiments to include the setting up, removal, and cleaning/organizing of lab materials/equipment/glassware. This may include the preparation of media, reagents, chemical solutions, and stains according to special requirements This may also include operation of an autoclave to sterilize glassware.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with expertise using the English language.
- Ability to be detailed-oriented, set priorities, meet deadlines and multitask with minimum supervision.
- Commitment to providing a student-centered learning environment.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, related supplies, computer hardware and software, and their applications.
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
- Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions
Essential Functions
- Coordinates and manages the daily functioning of the lab classrooms to ensure their operational efficiency to include overseeing safety and security of lab facilities.
- Organize equipment, reagents, and supplies within the lab classrooms and storage rooms.
- Establish and maintain records for all activities and programs and an inventory of consumable and non-consumable supplies.
- Help prepare requisitions for the purpose of re-stocking lab materials, coordinate with vendors for best pricing, track orders, and ensure delivery/receipt of ordered materials in a timely manner.
- Establish quality standards to maintain laboratory equipment performance to include routine inspections and troubleshooting
- Provides technical support for lab equipment, supplies and tools.
- Coordinate routine maintenance, repairs, and chemical/biohazard waste disposal.
- Attend training and policy updates related to building/laboratory risk management to ensure safety compliance of all personnel and students using the lab classrooms.
- Assist the department chair in planning and managing the budget related to laboratory operations.
- Assist the program coordinators and department chair plan new laboratory space setup in the Service areas and Continental sites.
- Assist faculty and lab instructors proctor exams as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
