ABOUT ROCKET MONEY
Rocket Money's mission is to empower people to live their best financial lives. We offer members a unique understanding of their finances and a suite of valuable services that save them time and money - ultimately giving them a leg up on their financial journey.
We're looking for a Staff Data Scientist with a passion for translating complex financial data into compelling public insights. This role will be instrumental in shaping public understanding of personal finance trends and advocating for positive change in the financial and consumer services industry. You will use Rocket Money's data to inform the public discussion on personal finance, drive brand awareness via mentions in news media, and enable the company to be seen as a leader and advocate for personal financial well being.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
  • Envision and build, from the ground up, compelling, recurring reports on consumer finances using Rocket Money's data. Create an expectation and anticipation for these reports from news media, policy orgs, and other stakeholders that influence public policy.
  • Create and publish blog posts that relate our data insights to current news stories, economic trends, business topics, and regulatory issues.
  • Work with company executives across Rocket Money and Rocket Companies to create a cadence of powerful, compelling talking points for use during media events.
  • Keep abreast of consumer finance trends and news, jumping on opportunities to use Rocket Money's data to further the conversation, generate positive PR, and ultimately drive public policy to the benefit of Rocket Money's users.
  • Generate positive PR by making Rocket Money's unique insights into consumer behavior available to news organizations and public policy organizations.
  • Analyze aggregate user financial data to uncover trends and insights relevant to a general audience.
  • Coordinate and fulfill data driven public relations requests, ensuring our data insights are accurately and repeatably represented in media coverage.
  • Develop and maintain repositories of approved public statements on financial trends and Rocket Money's positions.
  • Work closely with our legal team to coordinate press appearances and ensure all public communications comply with regulations and company policies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand Rocket Money and Rocket Companies products and identify opportunities where our data insights can drive positive change in financial regulations and policies.
  • Represent Rocket Money at industry events, presenting our insights and advocating for consumer-friendly financial and consumer practices.
  • Working with public relations teams, maintain relationships with news and public research/policy advocacy organizations. Create opportunities for Rocket Money to engage in the public conversation.
ABOUT YOU
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a talent for explaining complex topics to a general audience.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with public relations processes, media interactions, and avenues for public advocacy.
  • 8+ years of experience in data science, economics, statistics, and analytics, preferably in the fintech or financial services sector.
  • 5+ years of experience using data to drive the public conversation for a public company, industry group, or public policy advocacy org.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with large datasets. You know how to and always use tools that enable repeatability, transparency, and traceability in the execution of data driven reports.
  • Strong understanding of inferential statistical methods, especially survey/sampling methods. You'll have a formed opinion and go-to approach to re-weighting observations drawn from Rocket Money's user base to make statements about the US population.
  • A deep understanding of personal finance, economic trends, and the regulatory landscape of the personal financial and subscription based business industry.
  • Experience in creating data visualizations and crafting compelling narratives from data insights for wide public dissemination and publication.
  • A proactive mindset and the ability to work independently while collaborating with multiple teams.
  • Excellent time and program management skills - you constantly set expectations and consistently exceed them.

Bonus points if you have:
  • Experience in policy advocacy or working with regulatory or legal bodies to drive change and influence the public conversation.
  • A track record of published articles, blog posts, or media appearances on financial topics.
  • Experience building programs that enable sharing anonymized data with academic researchers, expanding the impact of business data in driving regulatory or legal change.
  • Public speaking experience, particularly in presenting data insights at conferences or to the media.
  • You think of yourself as an economist or a statistician - you might not even love this role title and want to talk about changing it.
