Job description

The Tool & Die Maker creates and designs machine parts by analyzing specifications, metal stock, setting-up and operating machine tools, and fit and assemble parts, and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and miscellaneous components using appropriate Tool Room equipment to complete the job in the most efficient manner.  
  • Analyzes work orders, blueprints, sketches, models, and/or descriptions to visualize shape of a part or tool and determine material required
  • Inputs dimensions, plan layout, and determines assembly method of sequence of operation
  • Responsible for heat treating all parts
  • Cuts, shapes, and trims prototypes to specified length or shape by using appropriate Tool Room equipment
  • Layout stock for machining 
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications
  • Inspects and verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances
  • Responsible for setting up and running water jets
  • Examines current or previously used dies, tools, jigs and fixtures and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part
  • Develops specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draws or sketches design of product
  • Promote a safe workplace by performing all tasks in a safe and thoughtful manner in compliance with all rules, procedures, instructions, devices, equipment and use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Maintain vigilance for any hazardous conditions or practices in the workplace and immediately report any unsafe condition or practice to your supervisor
  • Performs other duties as directed
  • Associate's Degrees in Machine Tool & Die and/or Toolmaker Journeyman's Card
  • 5 + years' experience as a Tool & Die Maker
  • Well-versed in analyzing and interpreting blueprints, sketches, models, and/or descriptions
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles
  • Ability to apply understanding of machine systems to design, fabricate, maintain, and identify improvement possibilities
  • Working knowledge of machine troubleshooting problems and determine solutions
  • Knowledge of hand tools and large scale machines
  • Solid understanding of mathematics and the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to hold a tolerance as close as + - .0002
  • Well-versed in hydraulics, welding, pneumatics, brazing and soldering
  • Proficient in CNC equipment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, CMM systems, 3D Modeling, and CAD Software Systems
