Job description

Sawmill Maintenance Manager

Location: Bowling Green, VA

Employment Type: Full-Time

Pay: $30.00–$35.00 per hour (depending on experience)

Marathon Staffing is hiring a Sawmill Maintenance Manager to help support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a pine sawmill. This is a hands-on role where you’ll troubleshoot, repair, and complete preventative maintenance and improvement projects—especially during non-production time (Fridays are typically a key window for planned work).

What you’ll do

  • Perform hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and adjustments for sawmill equipment
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and production equipment issues
  • Support safe and reliable operation of equipment including saws, conveyors, log handling equipment, edgers, trimmers, stackers, hydraulic systems, motors, bearings, chains, belts, sensors, and controls
  • Plan and complete preventative maintenance tasks to reduce downtime and improve reliability
  • Respond to production downtime issues and work efficiently to return equipment to safe operating condition
  • Inspect equipment for wear, damage, alignment issues, loose components, hydraulic leaks, electrical concerns, and guarding issues
  • Communicate equipment concerns, repair needs, downtime causes, and project priorities to management
  • Maintain maintenance records and documentation as required
  • Assist with installations, upgrades, fabrication, welding, modifications, and continuous improvement projects
  • Support lockout/tagout, guarding, housekeeping, and safe work practices

Safety matters

  • Follow and support all safety policies, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, electrical safety, and safe maintenance practices
  • Identify and help correct unsafe conditions and communicate safety concerns promptly
  • Ensure equipment is returned to service only when it is safe to operate

What you bring (required)

  • Strong mechanical maintenance skills in an industrial, sawmill, lumber, manufacturing, or similar environment
  • Working knowledge of electrical troubleshooting and repair
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems (leaks, pressure issues, cylinders, hoses, pumps, valves)
  • Ability and willingness to perform hands-on maintenance work
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and determine practical repair solutions
  • Ability to work safely around saws, conveyors, moving equipment, forklifts, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to read and follow manuals, diagrams, instructions, and maintenance procedures
  • Clear communication with management, production employees, and outside vendors/support personnel
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Must be at least 18 years old

Preferred (nice to have)

  • Prior sawmill, pallet, lumber, wood products, or heavy industrial maintenance experience
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs
  • Experience with welding/fabrication and common mechanical components (bearings, chains, belts, gearboxes, motors, sensors, controls)
  • PLC, motor control, VFD, or industrial electrical troubleshooting experience
  • Experience supporting safety programs and equipment guarding/lockout-tagout improvements
  • Forklift, loader, manlift, or mobile equipment experience

Work environment

This role is performed in an industrial pine sawmill environment with exposure to noise, sawdust, moving equipment, logs, sharp cutting equipment, vibration, weather conditions, hydraulic and electrical systems, and varying temperatures. You may stand, walk, climb, bend/kneel, reach, use tools, and perform occasional lifting or material handling as needed. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. Production schedules typically do not include Friday production, creating an important opportunity for planned repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, and downtime projects. Overtime, weekends, call-ins, or schedule flexibility may be required based on equipment needs and project work.

Mon to Thurs 7 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday 7 AM to noon.

Ready to apply?

If you’re a hands-on maintenance professional who values safety, reliability, and continuous improvement, we’d love to hear from you. Apply today through Marathon Staffing.
