Job Summary:
This position is accountable for providing technical and maintenance planning support to the mechanical maintenance department for rotating and fixed plant assets. The Mechanical Maintenance Planner is responsible for planning daily maintenance work, long-term project work, and assigned turnaround work scopes in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner. The position works within the Work Management Information System (WMIS) to develop detailed job plans, prepare work packages, coordinate materials, and support execution readiness.
The Mechanical Maintenance Planner works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Procurement, Contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure maintenance activities are properly scoped, planned, scheduled, and executed. The position supports site reliability and maintenance objectives through effective planning, field coordination, turnaround planning, and continuous improvement efforts. The Mechanical Maintenance Planner is responsible for ensuring work plans incorporate CF standards, government regulations, site safety requirements, and sound maintenance practices.
Job Description:
  • Maintain an orderly flow of the work order system, ensuring work requested by customers is completed in accordance with established priorities.
  • Work with Procurement, Engineering, and suppliers to identify, source, and coordinate all stock and non-stock materials required for maintenance activities.
  • Maintain fixed, rotating, and mechanical equipment records including Bills of Material, specifications, task lists, and associated planning data within the WMIS.
  • Maintain and improve planning data within WMIS and related maintenance systems, including equipment records, bills of material, task lists, job plans, material references, and maintenance history to support efficient work execution and reliability improvement.
  • Maintain and continuously improve Preventive Maintenance (PM) programs and supporting documentation.
  • Lead planning activities for assigned shutdown and turnaround work scopes including development of work packages, material readiness strategies, labor estimates, contractor requirements, execution plans, and readiness reviews. Provide field execution support during outages and turnarounds.
  • Participate in turnaround scope development, worklist validation, risk assessments, and readiness reviews to ensure work is properly defined and executable.
  • Develop detailed work plans including labor estimates, materials, tools, equipment, contractor requirements, safety considerations, and execution sequencing.
  • Specify and reserve stock materials required for completion of maintenance activities and include them within work package documentation.
  • Specify and coordinate special tools, lifting devices, rental equipment, and other resources required to execute maintenance activities.
  • Complete job plans and coordinate with the Maintenance Scheduler to support efficient scheduling and execution.
  • Support weekly and turnaround scheduling activities by developing labor estimates, identifying resource requirements, evaluating work execution constraints, and assisting with work prioritization and sequencing efforts.
  • Conduct field walk-downs to validate work scope, identify access requirements, confirm material needs, collect planning data, and improve work package quality.
  • Maintain an active field presence to support maintenance execution, validate job plans, resolve planning issues, and capture lessons learned for future work.
  • Consult with Maintenance Supervisors, Maintenance Technicians, Engineers, Operations personnel, and I&E personnel during planning and execution as necessary.
  • Coordinate with contractors and contract planners to develop executable work plans and ensure resource readiness, material availability, and work prerequisites are aligned for successful execution.
  • Coordinate with Production, Engineering, Maintenance, and Contractors to support installation, maintenance, upgrades, and plant improvement projects.
  • Support plant operations as necessary to troubleshoot equipment issues and develop repair strategies.
  • Assist in development of preventive maintenance strategies and maintenance frequencies in conjunction with Maintenance Management, Engineers, and Supervisors.
  • Develop job plans that clearly define inspection requirements, work procedures, resources, and execution expectations.
  • Monitor PM completion performance and backlog health and recommend actions necessary to maintain compliance targets.
  • Review field data for completeness and accuracy and coordinate with maintenance leadership to identify required corrective actions.
  • Prepare job summaries and maintenance records for inclusion in equipment history files.
  • Monitor equipment history for frequent failures or excessive repair costs.
  • Ensure maintenance and operating procedure changes resulting from equipment modifications are communicated through applicable Management of Change (MOC) processes.
  • Monitor industry practices and emerging technologies that can improve maintenance effectiveness, reduce costs, and improve plant reliability.
  • Ensure all planned maintenance work includes appropriate safety requirements, procedures, permits, isolation requirements, and risk mitigation measures.
  • Participate in post-turnaround and post-outage reviews, capture lessons learned, and identify opportunities to improve future planning effectiveness, work package quality, schedule performance, and equipment reliability.
  • Understand and comply with departmental processes and procedures supporting internal controls and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support site EHS initiatives through active participation in environmental, health, and safety programs and compliance with all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives through teamwork, effective planning practices, and application of quality improvement principles.
  • Respond to plant emergencies outside normal working hours as necessary to support maintenance activities and plant reliability objectives.

Position Requirements:
1. Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited university with two years of industry experience; Construction Management degree with two years of industry experience; or Certified Journeyman Millwright, Fully Qualified Maintenance Technician, or equivalent trade professional with a minimum of five years of industrial maintenance experience. Previous planning or supervisory experience preferred.
2. Experience planning shutdown, outage, or turnaround work in an industrial, chemical, refinery, fertilizer, power generation, or manufacturing environment preferred.
3. Strong communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Procurement, Contractors, and Leadership.
4. Demonstrated ability to coordinate work across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Procurement, Contractors, and other stakeholders to achieve safe and efficient execution of maintenance activities.
5. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
6. Strong knowledge of fixed, rotating, and mechanical equipment including pumps, compressors, steam turbines, heat exchangers, piping systems, motors, industrial fans, gearboxes, valves, and safety devices.
7. Strong knowledge of welding principles preferred.
8. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and capable of effectively utilizing WMIS, SAP, or equivalent maintenance management systems to develop work plans, maintain planning data, and support maintenance execution.
9. Ability to perform field walk-downs, evaluate work execution constraints, gather planning information, and develop practical maintenance execution strategies.
10. Working knowledge of labor estimating, contractor coordination, resource planning, and work execution sequencing for maintenance activities and outages.
11. Results oriented with strong initiative and ownership.
12. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
13. Must be able to climb towers, enter confined spaces, and lift up to 50 pounds.
14. Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and maintain strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
