SOUTH BAY SANDBLASTING & TANK CLEANING, INC. located in San Diego, CA shipyard related subcontractor looking to hire a Sand Blaster for our Preservation Department


Job Summary

A Sand Blaster has experience with the laborer job functions in the Preservation department and some painting experience. The ideal candidate knows how to perform sand blasting on underwater hulls, and tanks, ballast, fuel, and potable water. May be required to perform additional duties as deems necessary by the Production manager for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner.


Must be willing to travel.


Responsibilities:

  • Remove dirt, paint, grease, and other built-up material from surfaces
  • Set up and operate a blast booth or similar equipment
  • Load and unload the blast equipment
  • Operate and maintain blasting equipment, and ensure it is safe and efficient
  • Assist with painting or coating as needed
  • Apply and remove non-skid materials as needed
  • Use proper PPE, including respirators
  • Effectively using heavy and light equipment, depending on the jobsite/assignment
  • Implement and follow the company's safety, quality, environmental policies, and OSHA shipbuilding regulations

Qualifications:

  • Ability to read labels, safety warnings, and guidelines
  • Attentive to detail and alert always to ensure safety
  • Able to receive, and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers
  • Excellent Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to safely operate various vehicles and equipment
  • Previous experience, especially in particular industry, 3 years preferred
  • SSPC C7 Certification
  • Available to work long shifts when needed 10+ hours

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED, B.A., Technical/Vocational trade school, or apprenticeship

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

Work is conducted indoors and outdoors frequently exposed to prevailing weather conditions. Work indoor or aboard vessel which may have fumes, chemicals, and heat as well as noise and dust present depending upon the location of work. Safety equipment required.


The individual must be able to frequently climb inclined stairways and vertical. Work aboard the vessels can be strenuous and sometimes hazardous. Dynamic, fast-paced outdoor setting


with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity in the shipyard. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed.
