What is a Salesforce developer contract?

A Salesforce Developer Contract refers to a temporary or project-based position where a developer is hired to build, customize, or maintain applications on the Salesforce platform. Contract developers work on specific projects, such as integrating Salesforce with other systems, creating custom workflows, or developing new features using Apex, Visualforce, and Lightning components. These roles are typically time-bound and may be managed through staffing agencies or directly with companies seeking specialized Salesforce expertise. Contract work offers flexibility and exposure to a variety of industries and projects.

What does a contract Salesforce developer do?

As a contract Salesforce developer, your duties involve creating customer relationship management (CRM) software solutions for a company on a temporary or freelance basis. Your responsibilities vary depending on the type of project you work on and the needs of each client. You are often involved in application design and testing. You write code for the applications and solutions that you build using the Apex language. Since you work on an independent basis with different clients, your job involves assessing the needs of each client so that you can build the solutions and applications that they need.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract Salesforce developer?

To thrive as a Salesforce Developer on contract, you need strong proficiency in Apex, Visualforce, and Lightning components, along with a solid understanding of Salesforce architecture and experience with custom application development. Familiarity with Salesforce development tools (like Salesforce DX), version control systems (such as Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., Salesforce Platform Developer I/II) are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you deliver solutions efficiently and collaborate with clients and teams. These skills ensure that you can design, develop, and deploy tailored Salesforce solutions that meet business requirements within project timelines.

What are some common challenges faced by contract Salesforce developers?

Salesforce Developers on contract often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new client environments, understanding existing customizations, and aligning with varying coding standards. They may also need to efficiently manage time to meet tight project deadlines and ensure seamless collaboration with remote or cross-functional teams. Job description

About the job

Veradigm seeks an experienced Zuora Billing Architect to join our team and take ownership of our quote‑to‑cash infrastructure. In this role, you will serve as the subject‑matter expert on our end‑to‑end billing ecosystem, spanning Salesforce CPQ, Zuora Billing, and our integrated Professional Services Project & Portfolio Management (PPPM) platform, Kantata. You will work cross‑functionally with Revenue Operations, Finance, Sales, and Professional Services teams to design, optimize, and maintain scalable billing solutions that support our growing business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and maintain the end‑to‑end CPQ → Zuora Orders flow, ensuring clean, reliable data transformation from Salesforce CPQ Opportunities through to Zuora order creation and billing execution.
  • Design and govern Zuora product catalog structures including Rate Plans, Charges, and Amendments to support evolving business models (subscription, consumption, milestone‑based).
  • Own the integration architecture between Zuora and Kantata (PPPM), including billing milestone triggers, project go‑live date synchronization, and revenue recognition alignment.
  • Lead technical discovery, solutioning, and documentation for new billing use cases and product launches.
  • Partner with Salesforce CPQ admins and developers to ensure quote configurations translate accurately into Zuora orders without data loss or mapping errors.
  • Define and enforce data integrity standards across the CPQ → Zuora → Finance pipeline.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve billing exceptions, order errors, and integration failures in a timely manner.
  • Design, build, and maintain complex Zuora Workflows to automate billing operations and reduce manual intervention, including examples such as:
    • Auto‑generating invoices upon order activation or subscription amendment.
    • Triggering payment runs and retries based on invoice status or due date thresholds.
    • Automating dunning sequences and failed payment notifications.
    • Orchestrating order‑to‑bill flows when milestones or go‑live dates are updated from Kantata.
    • Syncing subscription state changes (e.g., cancellations, upgrades, renewals) back to Salesforce CPQ records.
    • Scheduling and executing batch billing runs aligned to contract terms or billing periods.
  • Drive system upgrades, sandbox testing, and release management for the Zuora platform.
  • Build and maintain technical documentation, data dictionaries, and integration runbooks.
  • Evaluate and recommend enhancements to the billing tech stack as business requirements evolve.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience with Zuora Billing, including deep knowledge of the Zuora object model, Order Actions, Rate Plans, and the Zuora API.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Salesforce CPQ, specifically architecting and maintaining the CPQ Opportunity → Zuora Orders integration (e.g., CPQ‑X connector, Z‑Billing, or custom middleware).
  • Strong understanding of subscription and recurring revenue business models.
  • Experience designing and troubleshooting bidirectional integrations between Zuora and third‑party platforms.
  • Proficiency with REST/SOAP APIs and integration middleware (e.g., MuleSoft, Boomi, or similar).
  • Ability to translate complex business billing requirements into scalable technical designs.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills—able to present technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Kantata (formerly Mavenlink/Kimble) or any comparable Professional Services Automation / PPPM platform.
  • Familiarity with ASC606 / IFRS15 revenue recognition principles and how they intersect with billing system design.
  • Zuora certification (e.g., Zuora Billing Certified or Zuora Revenue Certified).
  • Salesforce CPQ Specialist certification.
  • Experience working in a SaaS or technology services company with complex, multi‑element arrangements.
Compensation

$130,241‑$189,502. Compensation for this job is subject to market conditions, geographic considerations, the candidate’s unique skills and experience, state and local laws, and budget.
