What is a Salesforce developer contract?

A Salesforce Developer Contract refers to a temporary or project-based position where a developer is hired to build, customize, or maintain applications on the Salesforce platform. Contract developers work on specific projects, such as integrating Salesforce with other systems, creating custom workflows, or developing new features using Apex, Visualforce, and Lightning components. These roles are typically time-bound and may be managed through staffing agencies or directly with companies seeking specialized Salesforce expertise. Contract work offers flexibility and exposure to a variety of industries and projects.

What does a contract Salesforce developer do?

As a contract Salesforce developer, your duties involve creating customer relationship management (CRM) software solutions for a company on a temporary or freelance basis. Your responsibilities vary depending on the type of project you work on and the needs of each client. You are often involved in application design and testing. You write code for the applications and solutions that you build using the Apex language. Since you work on an independent basis with different clients, your job involves assessing the needs of each client so that you can build the solutions and applications that they need.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract Salesforce developer?

To thrive as a Salesforce Developer on contract, you need strong proficiency in Apex, Visualforce, and Lightning components, along with a solid understanding of Salesforce architecture and experience with custom application development. Familiarity with Salesforce development tools (like Salesforce DX), version control systems (such as Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., Salesforce Platform Developer I/II) are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you deliver solutions efficiently and collaborate with clients and teams. These skills ensure that you can design, develop, and deploy tailored Salesforce solutions that meet business requirements within project timelines.

What are some common challenges faced by contract Salesforce developers?

Salesforce Developers on contract often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new client environments, understanding existing customizations, and aligning with varying coding standards. They may also need to efficiently manage time to meet tight project deadlines and ensure seamless collaboration with remote or cross-functional teams. Effective communication and strong documentation skills are essential to ensure smooth handoffs and project continuity when the contract ends.

Job description

Salesforce QA Automation Engineer – Hybrid (Mostly Remote) – Phoenix, AZ – $71/hr W2

Location: Phoenix, AZ (Hybrid: first 2-3 days onsite, then about once a month)
Type: 6-Month Contract | Full-Time | W2 Only
Start: Late August 2026 (pending interview and onboarding)
About the Role
SunSoft Online is recruiting a Salesforce QA Automation Engineer for a state agency IT modernization program in Phoenix. You will lead quality assurance and test automation efforts as legacy state systems move to scalable, cloud-based Salesforce solutions (Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, and custom Public Sector Solutions). After the first 2-3 onsite onboarding days, the role is remote with roughly one onsite day per month.

Responsibilities

Automation Framework & Test Execution

  • Build, scale, and maintain reusable Salesforce test automation frameworks (Selenium, Provar, Playwright, Cypress, or UTAM)
  • Automate end-to-end workflows covering complex business processes, custom Apex logic, Lightning Web Components (LWC), Visualforce, and screen flows
  • Develop automated REST/SOAP API tests validating integrations between Salesforce and external systems (ERP, marketing automation, payment gateways)
  • Integrate test suites into CI/CD pipelines (Copado, AutoRABIT, Salesforce DevOps Center, GitHub Actions, Jenkins)

Quality Assurance & Strategy

  • Define test strategies, plans, and acceptance criteria with product owners, architects, and business analysts
  • Own the automated regression suite; run sanity/smoke testing around releases and deployment sprints
  • Manage defects in Jira or Azure DevOps; partner with developers on root-cause analysis
  • Manage sandbox test environments, test data generation, masking, and refreshes

Salesforce-Specific Quality Control

  • Validate Salesforce security models (profiles, roles, permission sets, field-level security, sharing rules)
  • Prepare and adapt automated suites for seasonal Salesforce releases to catch breaking changes early

Required Experience

  • 3-5+ years in QA automation, including 2-3+ years focused specifically on the Salesforce platform
  • Languages: Java, JavaScript, Python, or C#
  • Automation: Provar, Selenium WebDriver, Playwright, UTAM, or Cucumber/BDD
  • API testing: Postman, RestAssured, or SoapUI
  • DevOps: Jira, GitHub/GitLab, Jenkins, Copado, or AutoRABIT
  • Strong understanding of Salesforce architecture, data structures, Apex basics, LWC, and admin capabilities

Nice to Have

  • Salesforce Certified Administrator
  • Salesforce Certified Development Lifecycle and Deployment Architect (or similar platform certifications)

Important Requirements

  • Arizona-local candidates only; your resume must show your current city
  • Available for an in-person interview in Phoenix within one week of posting close
  • Able to start within two weeks of an offer
  • Background check and drug screening required (HireRight)
  • W2 only; no C2C; must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
