Tax Manager (Indirect Tax)

Location: Houston, TX Galleria Area

Reporting to the Head of Tax, the Tax Manager is a senior role within the tax department and leads enterprise indirect tax processes, ERP reporting transformation, and process automation across business units and locations, with responsibility for sales tax, property tax, business licenses, fixed assets, and team development. The Tax Manager also provides quarterly and yearly support to the income tax team.

  • Responsible for all indirect tax compliance preparation, review, approval, and filings for sales tax returns, property tax renditions/payments, and business licenses consistent with enterprise strategy.
  • Lead the transformation of indirect tax reporting and compliance, improving tax GL mapping, accuracy, scalability, and efficiency of multi-state sales and use tax, property tax, and business license processes.
  • Serve as the tax lead on ERP reporting modernization, partnering with Business Units, Finance, and IT to redesign tax processes of legacy systems, standardize reporting, and implement scalable, enterprise-wide compliance solutions.
  • Drive transactional tax process automation and data standardization, consolidating fragmented reports to significantly reduce the time required to generate accurate tax data.
  • Oversee general ledger reconciliations for indirect tax payments and accruals across all Carriage locations, streamlining workflows and enhancing efficiency, transparency, and audit readiness.
  • Lead initiatives to improve fixed asset data governance and reporting, aligning accounting records with property tax compliance and income tax reporting requirements.
  • Provide quarterly and annual support to the income tax process, including providing technical expertise on reconciliations, fixed asset adjustments, and other related reporting under ASC 740.
  • Conduct complex tax research and prepare technical analyses, memoranda, and matrices to support tax positions, compliance strategies, and emerging regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor and develop tax personnel, and training support staff responsible for indirect tax processing.
  • Maintain and enhance tax policies, procedures, and compliance calendars, ensuring timely filings, responses to tax notices, and adherence to SOX/internal audit standards.
  • Partner with the external consultants on strategic initiatives and special projects, including operational improvements, tax modeling, mergers & acquisitions, divestitures, and emerging tax matters as the business grows.

Requirements and Preferences

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting. Masters in tax preferred.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and financial reporting overlaps with indirect tax required.
  • Minimum of seven years indirect tax experience.
  • Experience working tax software. OPT (Tax.com), Onesource, PowerBi experience preferred.
  • Death-care industry experience a huge plus.
  • Technical knowledge of corporate income taxation and ASC 740 a plus.
  • Experience indirect state tax audits. Income tax examination experience a plus.
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) preferred.
  • Detail oriented and ability to work in a team setting.
  • Ability to meet daily deadlines and perform tasks in a timely manner.
  • Clear communicator and proven ability to lead others with empathy.
  • Ability to analyze data and provide recommendations.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and resolve issues with minimal supervision.
