Job Title: Sales Tax Manager

Job Description

The Sales Tax Manager supports the corporate accounting function by managing all aspects of sales and use tax compliance and related processes. This role focuses solely on sales tax, with the opportunity to add a specialist in the future, and plays a key part in ensuring accurate tax calculations, maintaining compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and contributing to profitability through effective tax strategies. The position also supports the business by answering tax-related questions, generating tax credits, determining correct tax codes for new items, and assisting with sales tax audits in a dynamic, evolving environment.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of dedicated state and local tax experience, with a strong focus on sales and use tax.
  • Strong knowledge of sales and use tax regulations, including the tax treatment of real property improvements and tangible personal property.
  • Experience working with tax software such as Avalara or similar sales tax systems (e.g., Vertex or comparable platforms).
  • Experience with ERP systems, preferably Epicor P21 or similar enterprise resource planning systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to analyze data and support tax calculations and reporting.
  • Proven ability to explain complex sales tax concepts in clear, practical terms to non-technical stakeholders, including field and construction teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to bridge the gap between complex tax regulations and practical business operations.
  • Strong analytical and technical research skills to interpret tax laws, assess implications, and develop compliant solutions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Avalara for exemption certificate management and automated sales tax filing is highly beneficial.
  • Familiarity with other sales tax software such as Vertex or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Prior experience supporting an organization with operations in over 40 states or other complex multi-state environments is advantageous.
  • Experience working closely with construction or field-based teams and tailoring communication to operational audiences is beneficial.
  • Background in corporate accounting or finance environments where tax compliance and cost control are key priorities.
  • Comfort working in a dynamic environment where daily tasks can vary, including responding to ad hoc questions and supporting ongoing system improvements.

Work Environment

The Sales Tax Manager works within a corporate accounting setting and reports into the broader finance leadership structure. The role supports a multi-state operation with locations in over 40 states and interacts regularly with accounting, IT, and field teams. Standard hours are typically 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility to work alternative schedules such as 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., depending on business needs and personal preference. The position relies heavily on technology, including an ERP system (Epicor P21), the Avalara tax management platform or similar tax software, and Microsoft Excel. The environment is professional, collaborative, and compliance-focused, with an emphasis on accuracy, responsiveness, and clear communication. A retiring team member will provide training and knowledge transfer over several months, offering support as the new hire transitions into the role.
