Job description

The State and Local Tax Department of one of the fastest-growing accounting firms in the country is seeking a Tax Assistant who is motivated to learn, excited to collaborate and passionate about delivering outstanding results. This individual will have a direct impact on our firm's mission of serving as a catalyst for those striving to achieve their highest potential. 

As a Tax Assistant with the State & Local Tax Department, you will be responsible for delivering exceptional client service and meeting the compliance needs of clients. Your primary duties will include the timely filing and preparation of sales/use tax returns related to the client's business operations, as we are operating as their tax function. Client compliance is a key responsibility of this role to avoid penalties and the danger of losing city/state licenses. This person must demonstrate the ability to handle multiple projects and details simultaneously. The Tax Assistant role requires the ability to work independently, be flexible, and demonstrate a high degree of confidentiality, all while being a team player. The successful candidate should also possess the desire and ability to maintain strong client relations and cross sell the firm's other services. 

What You'll Do:

  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of client tax returns; deadlines vary by client but range from monthly, quarterly, and yearly
  • Extracting and importing reports and data using applicable client databases
  • Formatting reports and data as needed for future use, which may include managing the data integrity with regular maintenance
  • Preparation of sales/use tax returns, as well as filing and collection of payment on time by the due date 
  • Assist in completing registration applications for various state/local taxes along with completion and submission of applicable documents
  • Help with additional client needs such as identifying tax opportunities and preparing refund claims
  • Perform tax research, scheduling, or assist in tax planning as needed
  • Assist with other sales/use tax projects as assigned, including multi-state tax projects that may include refund reviews, tax compliance, nexus reviews, voluntary disclosures, audit defense, and assessment appeals  
  • Provide various support to facilitate marketing opportunities 

What We're Looking For:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, primarily Excel required
  • Ability to learn tax filing skills, basic sales tax concepts, and tax/other software as needed
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong planning and organization skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Able to adapt to changing regulations while staying consistent
  • Comfortable working overtime as needed. Specific overtime requirements will be discussed during an interview process.

Your Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of sales/state tax exposure
  • Basic understanding of sales and use tax preferred
  • Property tax knowledge preferred
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
