What is a sales engineer?

Sales Engineers are professionals who combine technical knowledge of products or services with strong sales skills to provide solutions to customers. They work closely with both the sales and engineering teams to understand customer needs, demonstrate products, and explain the technical benefits. Sales Engineers often assist with product design and customization, and help customers understand how a product or service can solve their specific problems. Their role typically involves both pre-sales and post-sales support, making them key to building strong customer relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Engineer, you need a strong combination of technical knowledge in engineering or a related field and proven sales acumen, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, as well as proficiency in technical presentation tools and product-specific certifications, is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to build client relationships are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications enable Sales Engineers to effectively bridge the gap between customer needs and technical solutions, driving both client satisfaction and business growth.

What does a sales engineer do?

As a sales engineer, your responsibilities are to serve as a technical advisor to prospective clients. Your duties may include helping customers decide what to buy for a project, demonstrating the use of products, providing instruction and support, and even performing installations. Companies typically ask sales engineers to sell complex technological or scientific products, which requires extensive knowledge of the parts and functions of each product, as well as related processes. You may also be asked to travel on a regular basis, present information to large crowds, or work irregular hours to meet sales goals and the needs of clients.

How do sales engineers typically collaborate with both technical teams and clients during the sales process?

Sales Engineers act as a vital bridge between technical teams and clients, often working closely with product managers, engineers, and sales representatives. They translate complex technical information into clear, client-friendly solutions and ensure that client requirements are accurately communicated to internal teams. This collaboration involves participating in product demonstrations, technical presentations, and solution design meetings. By fostering effective communication between stakeholders, Sales Engineers help tailor offerings to client needs and drive successful sales outcomes.

About Sheetak

Sheetak is a pioneer in solid-state thermoelectric technology, delivering precision thermal management solutions across industries including medical devices, aerospace, defense, data center cooling, and industrial electronics. Sheetakโ€™s proprietary thermoelectric modules and systems enable highly reliable, compact, and energyโ€‘efficient temperature control where conventional cooling solutions fall short. As we expand our commercial reach, we are growing our Customer Solutions Center with talented Sales Engineers who can engage customers at the engineering level and drive designโ€‘in wins.

Position Summary

The Sales Engineer is an individual contributor role sitting within Sheetakโ€™s Customer Solutions Center and reporting directly to the Customer Solutions Officer. This position is the frontline technical resource for customers and field sales โ€” responsible for understanding customer thermal management challenges, recommending Sheetak solutions, and guiding customers through the designโ€‘in and qualification process.

The ideal candidate brings at least five years of combined technical customer support and sales engineering experience, a solid foundation in thermal or electronic systems engineering, and the ability to credibly engage with customer engineering teams while collaborating closely with Sheetakโ€™s commercial and product organizations. This is a highly collaborative, customerโ€‘facing role that sits at the intersection of engineering and sales.

Key Responsibilities Technical Customer Support & Application Engineering
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for assigned customers, responding to application questions, design inquiries, and product selection requests in a timely and technically credible manner.
  • Analyze customer thermal management requirements and recommend appropriate Sheetak thermoelectric modules, assemblies, or systemโ€‘level solutions.
  • Support customers through the designโ€‘in process, providing guidance on thermal modeling, component integration, mounting configurations, and systemโ€‘level performance expectations.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, application notes, and product demonstrations tailored to customer engineering teams.
  • Coordinate with Sheetakโ€™s internal engineering team to address complex application questions, obtain custom specifications, or elevate technical issues requiring deeper support.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of application guides, FAQs, and technical reference materials for common customer use cases.
Sales Support & Opportunity Development
  • Partner with Sheetakโ€™s regional sales team and the Customer Solutions Officer to advance opportunities through the technical qualification and designโ€‘in phases of the sales cycle.
  • Participate in customer discovery calls, site visits, and technical reviews to identify application fit, scope requirements, and uncover expansion opportunities within accounts.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical proposals, RFQ responses, and billโ€‘ofโ€‘materials recommendations aligned to customer specifications.
  • Track and document technical engagement activity, designโ€‘in progress, and customer feedback in CRM tools; provide regular updates to the Customer Solutions Officer.
  • Identify opportunities to expand Sheetakโ€™s presence within existing accounts by surfacing additional application needs or adjacent programs.
Crossโ€‘Functional Collaboration
  • Relay customer application insights, competitive intelligence, and field feedback to Sheetakโ€™s product and engineering teams to inform roadmap decisions and product improvements.
  • Collaborate with marketing to contribute applicationโ€‘specific content, customer success stories, and technical collateral that supports the sales and demandโ€‘generation effort.
  • Work within the Customer Solutions Center team to share best practices, support knowledge transfer, and contribute to a consistent, highโ€‘quality customer experience.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in a sales engineering, applications engineering, or technical customer support role, with direct engagement with engineeringโ€‘level customers.
  • Working knowledge of thermal management principles, including heat transfer fundamentals, thermal budgeting, and cooling system design.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate customer requirements into product recommendations and communicate technical solutions clearly to both engineering and nonโ€‘engineering audiences.
  • Experience supporting B2B sales cycles in a technical capacity โ€” including participation in customer meetings, proposal preparation, and design review support.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to small groups of customer engineers and program managers.
  • Proficiency with standard technical tools such as Microsoft Office / Google Workspace; familiarity with CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot).
Preferred
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with thermoelectric modules (TEMs), Peltier cooling devices, or solidโ€‘state thermal management components.
  • Familiarity with thermal simulation or analysis tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, Flotherm, or equivalent.
  • Exposure to one or more of Sheetakโ€™s key target verticals: photonics, medical devices, aerospace & defense, data center / HPC, semiconductor test, or industrial electronics.
  • Experience working in a fastโ€‘paced, highโ€‘growth technology company or startup environment.
  • Existing relationships with engineering or procurement contacts at OEMs or system integrators in relevant industries.
Core Competencies
  • Technical Aptitude: Quickly understands customer applications and applies sound engineering reasoning to recommend and defend Sheetak solutions.
  • Customer Focus: Builds trust with customer engineering teams through responsiveness, accuracy, and a genuine interest in solving their problems.
  • Commercial Awareness: Understands how technical engagement drives sales outcomes; works with a sense of urgency around designโ€‘in milestones and opportunity advancement.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively across internal teams โ€” sales, product, and engineering โ€” to deliver a seamless customer experience.
  • Communication: Explains technical concepts clearly and adapts messaging for different audiences, from bench engineers to program managers.
  • Organization: Manages multiple customer engagements simultaneously with attention to detail and consistent followโ€‘through
What We Offer
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience, plus performanceโ€‘based incentive compensation tied to designโ€‘in and revenue milestones.
  • Equity participation in a highโ€‘growth, ventureโ€‘backed deepโ€‘tech company.
  • A collaborative, technically stimulating environment where your work directly influences customer success and company growth.
  • Mentorship and development support from experienced technical sales leadership within the Customer Solutions Center.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
