USAL is seeking an experienced and driven Safety Manager to lead transportation safety and regulatory compliance programs. This high-impact leadership role is responsible for protecting commercial motor vehicle operations, ensuring full regulatory compliance, and building a culture of safety excellence across the organization. The Safety Manager directly supervises a team of Safety & Risk Specialists and serves as a compliance authority for DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and environmental regulations. This role requires a hands-on safety leader with deep expertise in DOT/FMCSA regulations, accident investigation using root cause analysis, workers' compensation, and auto liability claims management in a fast-paced commercial trucking environment.

As a Mgr, Safety you will:

  • Direct all accident and incident investigation processes from initial notification through final resolution, ensuring thorough analysis, accurate findings, and timely outcomes.
  • Lead root cause analyses using structured methodologies such as 5-Why, Cause Mapping, FMEA, or equivalent to identify systemic failure points.
  • Develop and drive implementation of corrective and preventive actions to eliminate recurrence and strengthen safety performance.
  • Establish and enforce chargeability determination standards to ensure consistency, fairness, and documentation integrity across incident review panels.
  • Analyze incident trend data, CSA scores, and claims history to identify systemic risks and implement data-driven mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee workers' compensation claim coordination, including initial reporting, investigation support, and return-to-work program management in partnership with HR, Corporate Risk, and third-party administrators.
  • Manage auto liability claims from initial incident through resolution, partnering with Corporate Risk, Legal, and TPA partners to minimize exposure.
  • Monitor claims trends and use data to develop risk mitigation strategies that reduce the frequency and severity of losses.
  • Oversee OSHA compliance programs, including OSHA 300 injury and illness recordkeeping, hazard communication, and regulatory response management.
  • Conduct and lead regular yard and shop audits to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, environmental regulations, and company safety standards, identifying hazards and driving corrective actions.
  • Lead preparation for and response to internal and external regulatory reviews.
  • Partner with Operations and Maintenance teams to embed proactive safety and environmental compliance practices into daily operations.
  • Serve as a key resource and trusted advisor on DOT and FMCSA regulations governing commercial motor vehicle operations, providing guidance, interpretation, and support to business leaders and operational teams while collaborating with internal and external experts as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with Driver Qualification File standards, Hours-of-Service regulations, ELD monitoring, Drug & Alcohol Testing program administration, Clearinghouse requirements, CSA performance metrics, FMCSA intervention processes, and vehicle inspection and maintenance regulatory standards.
  • Interpret and implement regulatory changes, updating company policies to ensure continuous compliance with federal and state transportation laws.
  • Directly supervise and develop a team of Safety & Risk Specialists, providing day-to-day direction, coaching, and performance management.
  • Assign and oversee regulatory compliance activities, incident investigations, audits, and reporting functions across the team to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review and approve investigative findings, corrective action plans, and regulatory documentation to ensure consistency and defensibility.
  • Monitor team performance metrics and ensure staff maintain current, comprehensive knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Support staff development, training, and succession planning to maintain a high-performing, compliance-focused safety department.

What We Need From You

  • 7-10+ years of progressive safety leadership experience in commercial trucking, transportation, logistics, fleet operations, or other highly regulated, fleet-intensive industries Required
  • Extensive, hands-on working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations; must be able to audit, advise, and defend compliance in real time Required

  • Demonstrated expertise leading accident investigations with structured root cause analysis methodologies and driving corrective and preventive action programs to completion Required
  • Proven experience overseeing workers' compensation and auto liability claims management, including TPA coordination and return-to-work programs Required
  • Hands-on experience conducting yard, shop, and facility audits for OSHA compliance and environmental regulatory requirements Required
  • Proven experience directly supervising safety professionals, including developing, coaching, and holding safety staff accountable Required
  • Significant OSHA compliance expertise, including recordkeeping, OSHA 300 logs, workplace inspections, and hazard assessments Required
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to use safety data, CSA metrics, and claims trends to build proactive risk mitigation strategies Required
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to interface confidently with regulatory agencies, executive leadership, and frontline operations Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Transportation Management, or a related field Preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation Preferred
  • Familiarity with auto transport, vehicle logistics, or car haul operations Preferred
  • Experience with in-cab telematics and driver behavior monitoring platforms Preferred
