What is a SAS Credit Risk Analyst?

SAS Credit Risk Analysts are professionals who use SAS (Statistical Analysis System) software to analyze and manage credit risk for financial institutions or organizations. They collect and interpret data to assess the likelihood of borrowers defaulting on loans or credit products. Their work typically involves building statistical models, monitoring credit portfolios, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. By providing insights and recommendations, SAS Credit Risk Analysts help organizations make informed lending decisions and minimize financial losses.

What are some common challenges faced by SAS Credit Risk Analysts in managing data quality and model accuracy?

SAS Credit Risk Analysts often encounter challenges related to ensuring the accuracy and consistency of large datasets, as financial data can be incomplete, outdated, or inconsistent across sources. Managing data quality is critical, as even minor errors can significantly impact risk models and decision-making. Additionally, analysts must regularly validate and update their SAS models to reflect changing economic conditions and regulatory requirements. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with data engineers, regular model performance reviews, and staying current with industry best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAS Credit Risk Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SAS Credit Risk Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of credit risk modeling, and a background in statistics, finance, or a related field. Expertise in SAS programming, familiarity with data mining tools, and knowledge of risk management frameworks or relevant certifications like FRM or CFA are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting results and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate risk assessment, data-driven decision-making, and compliance with regulatory requirements in financial institutions.

Who we are

Founded in 1997, Merrick Bank is an FDIC-insured financial institution headquartered in South Jordan, Utah, with over $10 billion in assets. A wholly owned subsidiary of CardWorks Financial Group, Merrick Bank serves roughly five million cardmembers and more than 100,000 merchant customers nationwide.

What we do

We provide credit cards, recreational loans, deposit accounts, merchant services and bank sponsorships to consumers and businesses. As a leader in non-prime lending and merchant acquiring, we combine innovative technology with data-driven insights to help underserved consumers build and strengthen credit while delivering integrated, scalable payment solutions for businesses.

Merrick Bank ranks among the top 20 FDIC-insured credit card issuers in the U.S. and among the top 15 merchant acquirers by transaction volume.

The Senior Analyst, Credit Risk Oversight, plays a key role in the Bank's second line of defense by supporting independent oversight, monitoring, and assessment of credit risk across the consumer lending portfolios. This position performs portfolio risk analysis, monitors emerging credit trends, develops executive-level risk reporting, and supports the review and challenge of material credit decisions.

The role serves as a primary coordinator of the Bank's Quarterly Credit Oversight reporting process. This position reports to the Director, Credit Risk Oversight.

Essential Functions:

Produces recurring and ad hoc reporting, synthesizing portfolio performance, forecast results, credit decisions, and emerging risks into clear, actionable insights for management and governance committees.

Risk Assessment & Governance Support:
Supports independent assessment of portfolio risk, CECL forecasts, and material credit decisions. Assists in the preparation of oversight documentation, challenge artifacts, concurrence materials, and governance reporting.

Credit Analytics & Early Warning Monitoring:
Develops and maintains portfolio monitoring tools, dashboards, and analytical frameworks used to assess portfolio health and identify early warning indicators. Evaluates performance relative to expectations, forecasts, and risk appetite thresholds.

Review & Challenge Support:
Performs analytical reviews of assumptions, methodologies, and performance drivers supporting credit forecasts and credit decisions. Identifies areas requiring additional analysis, clarification, or challenge and presents findings to Credit Risk Oversight leadership.

Cross-Functional Partnership:
Collaborates across first- and second-line functions to gather information, understand portfolio developments, and support effective risk oversight. Develops productive working relationships while maintaining an independent risk perspective.

Requirements for Success:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or quantitative discipline is required.
  • Master's degree (MBA, Economics, Statistics or related field) is preferred.
