Department Overview

The Healthy Oregon Project (HOP) is a large-scale study led by OHSU researchers that seeks to learn about the health of people in and around Oregon and build a repository to aid in future health research. HOP provides surveys, personalized health information, and cancer early detection screenings to participants via an app-based platform. HOP is looking for an individual who is interested in population health research and is inspired by HOP's central goal: to empower innovative research by utilizing real-world data to close gaps in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment- all while advancing health for all Oregonians and beyond.

The Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) team at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute aims to identify and address priority issues related to cancer prevention, early detection and screening, and access to cancer care in Oregon and Southwest Washington through grantmaking, research and community outreach and engagement.

The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable.

Function/Duties of Position

Responsibilities include:  

  • Establish and maintain relationships with partners and ensure their alignment with HOP goals
  • Lead, oversee, and drive continual improvement of the cohort
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for HOP
  • Lead IRB modification management and compliance reviews for collaborative research projects with both OHSU and external research partners
  • Collect and aggregate data and provide reports on operations within the repository
  • Ensure that participant experience is smooth and that all human subject rights are protected and participants respected.
  • Assist in multiple project needs for HOP, while also occasionally supporting ancillary studies
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all HOP participants, answering questions and assisting with technical troubleshooting of the HOP app
  • Coordinate new researcher requests, such as: data or sample requests, survey additions, and recruitment requests.
  • Additional duties may include: supply procurement, documenting and updating standard operating procedures, reviewing and updating documents, survey development and User Acceptance Testing of new app features and surveys.

OHSU Research classification: Research Project Coordinator, represented by the Research Workers United (RWU), subject to the active collective bargaining agreement between OHSU and RWU.

Required Qualifications

Education and experience:

Master's in relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience

Note: May require specific experience in particular area of research

Relevant experience should include:

  • Research coordination experience
  • Experience with IRB modification management
  • Experience with IRB review process
  • Experience in basic science lab work

Knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovative processes quickly
  • Ability to prioritize short- and long-term project needs
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
  • Proficiency with computers, specifically MS Office
  • Proficiency in using mobile apps as a user

Working Conditions: 

  • Primary work location is the Knight Cancer Research Building in Portland, OR. Remote work not guaranteed.
  • May be required to travel to other Knight worksite locations, including using the Portland Aerial Tram.
