What are rubber plants?

Rubber plants are evergreen trees scientifically known as Ficus elastica. They are native to Southeast Asia and are widely cultivated as ornamental houseplants due to their large, glossy leaves and relative ease of care. In addition to their decorative appeal, rubber plants were historically tapped for latex, which is used to produce natural rubber. However, most commercial rubber today comes from the Hevea brasiliensis tree instead. Rubber plants thrive indoors with bright, indirect light and moderate watering.
