What are some common challenges faced by RPG consultants when working with legacy IBM i systems?

RPG consultants often encounter challenges such as outdated or poorly documented code, integration with modern technologies, and varying coding standards. These issues require strong problem-solving skills and patience, as consultants must analyze and update legacy systems without disrupting business operations. Collaboration with in-house IT teams and end-users is crucial to ensure smooth transitions and successful project outcomes.

To thrive as an RPG Consultant, you need a deep understanding of IBM i (AS/400) systems, expertise in RPG (Report Program Generator) programming languages, and experience with database management, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer for i, CL programming, and source control systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, clear communication, and the ability to collaborate with clients and technical teams help set top consultants apart. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering reliable software solutions, supporting complex business processes, and ensuring system longevity in enterprise environments.

Job description

RPG Consultants is a third-generation, family-led retirement plan administration and recordkeeping firm with a strong tradition of personal service and long-standing client relationships. The firm takes a hands-on, consultative approach, working closely with clients as a trusted partner rather than simply a traditional back-office provider.

We are hiring a Business Operations & Sales Associate to join our team and support both the day-to-day execution and continued improvement of our sales and broader business operations.

This is an early-career role for someone who is highly capable, curious, and interested in learning how a small business operates. Initially, the role will take ownership of many of RPG’s day-to-day sales operations, marketing, and administrative processes. Over time, the role will expand to include broader projects involving data, technology, process improvement, and other areas of the business.

We are not looking for someone who simply waits for tasks to be assigned. We want someone who asks good questions, figures things out, takes ownership of their work, and looks for ways to make processes better. The right person will have the opportunity to work directly with RPG’s leadership team, learn how the business operates, and take on increasing responsibility as their skills and understanding develop.

  • Manage sales proposals and contracts, CRM activity, follow-ups, and other recurring sales workflows.
  • Work with the Strategic Development Manager on prospecting, including research, target lists, LinkedIn outreach, and follow-up.
  • Help execute advisor and business-owner outreach campaigns and track results.
  • Create and update sales and marketing materials, including presentations, onepagers, brochures, and email content.
  • Maintain RPG’s website and support LinkedIn and other digital marketing efforts.
  • Support data, technology, and process-improvement projects across RPG.
  • Research tools, vendors, and potential solutions to business problems.
  • Use AI, automation, and tools such as Zapier to improve recurring workflows.
  • Support data analysis using Excel and other analytics tools.
  • Manage recurring administrative workflows and incoming inquiries that support RPG’s sales and business operations.
  • As experience develops, take increasing ownership of sales processes and contribute ideas to improve RPG’s operations.

What We Are Looking For

  • Initiative and ownership. You identify what needs to happen next, follow through on commitments, and do not require constant prompting
  • Curiosity and problem-solving ability. You ask good questions, investigate issues, and are interested in improving how work gets done
  • Attention to detail. You produce accurate work and check your own output, particularly when it is client-facing
  • Strong communication skills. You can communicate clearly and professionally in writing and conversation both internally and externally to clients/partners
  • Analytical and technical aptitude. You are comfortable with Excel, business data, and learning unfamiliar software and technology
  • Coachability and desire to grow. You actively seek feedback, learn quickly, and want your responsibilities to grow as your capabilities develop
  • Interest in AI and automation. You are curious about using emerging tools to improve business processes and are willing to experiment thoughtfully
  • No retirement plan industry experience required. We expect to teach you the industry. What matters more is your ability to learn quickly, think critically, communicate well, and take ownership of your work

Experience

  • 0-2 years of professional experience preferred, including internships
  • Bachelor’s degree required. We care more about demonstrated capability, curiosity, and fit than a particular field of study.
  • Previous experience in sales, operations, marketing, or a similar environment is a plus
  • Experience with any of the following is a plus: CRM systems, WordPress, Zapier or other automation tools, Power BI, KNIME, Alteryx or other data tools, Canva or similar design tools, SEO familiarity, AI tools beyond basic prompting

Why This Role

This role offers broad exposure and meaningful responsibility from the start. You will report directly to RPG’s Strategic Development Manager, and work closely with RPG’s leadership team on sales, operations, data, technology, and process-improvement initiatives.

Because RPG is a small, entrepreneurial firm, you will have visibility into how decisions are made and how different parts of the business work together. As you learn the business and demonstrate good judgment, you will have opportunities to take ownership of processes, propose new ideas, and work on increasingly complex projects across the company.
