A route relief driver is a truck driver that typically works on call. Responsibilities often involve driving a truck for part of a trip, maintaining contact with dispatch, and logging time on the road. They may also load and unload vehicles, depending on the nature of the job. Other duties include inspecting cargo and trailers during the entire course of the route. They must obey all applicable traffic laws and all state and federal regulations. A route relief driver often works part-time, but there may be full-time positions available with larger companies.
