Rotational Project Engineer information

What is a rotational project engineer?

Rotational Project Engineers are early-career engineering professionals who participate in structured programs that rotate them through different departments, projects, or locations within a company. These rotations provide exposure to various aspects of engineering, such as design, manufacturing, operations, and project management. The goal is to develop a well-rounded skillset, build a broad understanding of the organization, and identify areas of interest for long-term career growth. Rotational Project Engineers often work with mentors and are given increasing responsibility as they progress through the program.

How does the rotational aspect of a rotational project engineer role enhance professional development and career growth?

The rotational structure allows project engineers to gain hands-on experience across multiple departments or project phases, such as design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. This exposure helps develop a broad skill set, fosters cross-functional understanding, and enables you to discover your professional strengths and interests. Employers often use these programs to identify high-potential employees for future leadership roles, making it an excellent pathway for career advancement. Additionally, frequent team changes enhance adaptability and communication skills, both of which are highly valued in engineering management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rotational project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rotational Project Engineer, you need a bachelor's degree in engineering, strong analytical abilities, and a solid understanding of project management principles. Familiarity with CAD software, project scheduling tools like MS Project, and possibly certifications such as EIT or PMP is often valued. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills help you succeed in varied assignments and environments. These competencies ensure you can quickly contribute to diverse projects, learn new systems, and collaborate effectively across departments.

What is the difference between Rotational Project Engineer vs Mechanical Project Engineer?

In this role, you will collaborate with diverse and multidisciplinary teams of engineers and technicians, delivering technical services to our esteemed clients across government, public, and private sectors. Your primary focus will be on mechanical engineering for rotating machines, specifically for water resource projects. This includes working on a variety of equipment such as conventional hydro Kaplan and Francis units, bulb units, reversible pump-turbines and motor-generators for pumped storage plants, and pumps and motors for power, water, wastewater, and light industrial projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborating with project engineers and project managers to assist in planning, design, CAD drafting/modeling, and preparation of manufacturing plans, bid documents, technical specifications, and capital cost estimates for various engineering projects.
  • Working with clients to identify project goals and priorities and providing strategies and approaches to achieve those objectives.
  • Determining criteria, loads, and boundary conditions for the mechanical design of turbines and/or generators including supporting calculations and design basis documents.
  • Utilizing knowledge of appropriate and efficient manufacturing processes.
  • Performing quality control and designing inspection & test plans throughout the manufacturing process of the equipment.
  • Attending and witnessing installation and commissioning of equipment.
  • Performing field measurements and condition assessment of equipment.

  • Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal communication skills in English are essential. Knowledge of other languages is considered an asset to communicate with international clients and suppliers.
  • Organizational Skills: The candidate should have strong organizational and workload management skills. They should be able to identify priorities between multiple tasks and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments to meet project due dates.

Job Requirements
  • The ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending, climbing up ladders, and crawling in tight spaces. This includes performing site work, such as turbine and generator inspection, which may sometimes be identified as a confined space.
  • The capacity to occasionally lift and/or move items up to 40 pounds, such as a man door.
  • Mandatory use of required personal protection equipment (hardhat, safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, fall protection, etc.) for field work.
  • The ability and willingness to travel on company business as required for domestic and international assignments. This includes flying and driving to work locations, such as power plants or fabrication shops for meetings, turbine and generator inspections, and plant condition assessments.

Please note that these requirements are essential to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees and to maintain the high standard of service that Stantec is known for. We appreciate your understanding and compliance.
