Job Title: AE Defense Turbo-Machinery Design Engineer

Working Pattern: Full-time

Working location: Indianapolis, IN

AE Defense Turbo-Machinery Design Engineer will work primarily with the components within the Compressor & Turbine subsystems with special attention to compressor and turbine wheels to design, produce, and test components and mechanical systems. In this role, the candidate ensures the component definition meets project requirements from concept through to demonstration test.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Create innovative design solutions to achieve technical and business requirements
  • Create component requirements documents for owned hardware and hardware design concepts and perform trade studies to optimize hardware
  • Carry out analyses using formula-based calculations and/or automated workflows for dimensioning of parts and components (e.g. stability, stiffness, profiles, balance point, weights) and where appropriate, using analytical rules, tools and methods to underwrite the design solution against requirements.
  • Support creation of detailed drawings and model based definition and support project/manufacturing to procure conforming hardware
  • Provide limits for engine and rig testing and supporting testing including assessment of test results and tested hardware
  • Develop solutions for dispositioning non-conforming hardware in production and aftermarket
  • Develop technical presentations and associated technical reports in the delivery of solutions
  • Create and review functional and physical interfaces and generate analysis requirements for components
  • Provide input for component level risks and complete DFMEA and risk assessments for owned components.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 2+ years of design experience
  • Masters Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience using computer aided design tools such as NX
  • In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must be eligible to obtain and maintain security clearance, which requires US Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with gas turbines (blades, vanes, wheels, casings) component and sub-system design, including materials, dynamics, and aerothermal methods
  • An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters
  • Experience using computer aided design tools such as NX
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and the creation of limit stacks
  • Experience with generic design processes as well as component specific design guidance
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and certification frameworks
  • Good communication and presentation skills at all levels of the organization
  • Familiarity with engine assembly and testing
  • Familiarity with gas turbine compressor & turbine wheel design and analysis methods
  • Experience using finite element analysis tools (such as ANSYS)
  • Programming skills such as Visual Basic, Matlab, Python, PERL, C++ and/or computational tools such as Matlab
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment; willingness to accept responsibility and take initiative; and drive to finish assigned tasks on schedule
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
