Job description

Westfalia Technologies, Inc. is seeking a motivated Vision Guided Robotics Intern to join our Research and Development team. This internship provides hands-on experience in developing intelligent software systems that enable robotic platforms to operate in industrial environments.                         

The intern will support the application of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and robotics technologies to enhance automation capabilities and contribute to vision-guided robotic systems used in material handling and warehouse automation. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to apply academic knowledge to real-world robotics challenges.

Location Requirements: Must live within a 50 mile radius of Westfalia Technologies Inc Headquarters and within the following states - DE, MD, NJ, PA.

Job Functions:
  • Assist in developing and testing software solutions for robotics and automation applications.
  • Support the team in applying AI, machine learning, and computer vision techniques to solve engineering challenges.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of perception systems for robotic platforms.
  • Help monitor and evaluate system performance, including testing models and analyzing results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software and engineering, on project-based work.
  • Document project work, findings, and progress for internal stakeholders.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and best practices in AI, robotics, and computer vision.
  • Protect confidential and proprietary information.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic to intermediate programming experience in Python and/or C++ (coursework or project-based experience acceptable).
  • Familiarity with robotics concepts and frameworks such as ROS2 (through coursework or projects preferred).
  • Exposure to machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Basic understanding of computer vision concepts and tools such as OpenCV.
  • Familiarity with concepts such as image processing, object detection, or neural networks (e.g., CNNs).
  • Exposure to simulation tools (e.g., Gazebo, Unity, or similar) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Git or version control systems is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, both verbally and in writing.

Desired Skills:

  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, or controls systems through coursework or projects
  • Interest in automation, robotics, or product development
Education and Experience:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s degree, or PHD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Relevant coursework, academic projects, or research experience in robotics, AI, or computer vision is strongly preferred.
  • Prior internship or hands-on project experience is a plus but not required.
 Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in an office, lab, and/or light industrial environment
  • Ability to stand, walk, and occasionally lift or move light equipment as needed
  • Ability to use a computer and standard office equipment for extended periods
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and via virtual platforms.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 15 pounds (e.g., laptop, equipment, or materials).
Travel Requirements:
  • In-office at the York, PA facility will be required.
  • This position requires little to no travel (0-5%) outside of the standard commute.

Temporary Housing Stipend: A temporary taxable housing stipend may be available for eligible interns whose permanent residence is more than 75 miles from Westfalia’s York, PA location. If offered, the stipend will be paid through payroll, subject to applicable taxes and withholdings, and will apply only during the approved internship period. Stipend eligibility, amount, and duration will be confirmed in writing as part of the internship offer.

Work Authorization: Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
