How much do robotics controls engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for robotics controls engineer in the United States is $96,574.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,500.00 and $108,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Controls Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Controls Engineer, you need a strong background in control systems, robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and typically a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with programming languages (such as C++, Python, or MATLAB), PLCs, and simulation tools like ROS or LabVIEW is essential, and certifications in robotics or automation can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and address complex engineering challenges. These skills are critical for designing, implementing, and optimizing advanced robotic systems that perform reliably and efficiently in real-world applications.

What is the difference between Robotics Controls Engineer vs Automation Engineer?

AspectRobotics Controls EngineerAutomation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in robotics or control systemsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in automation or control systems
Work EnvironmentRobotics labs, manufacturing plants, research facilitiesManufacturing, process industries, industrial settings
Industry UsageRobotics development, manufacturing automationProcess automation, industrial systems
Search IntentRobotics controls, robot programming, control systemsAutomation systems, process control, industrial automation

Robotics Controls Engineers focus on designing and implementing control systems specifically for robots and robotic applications, often working in robotics labs or manufacturing environments. Automation Engineers have a broader scope, working on automating industrial processes across various industries. While both roles require control system knowledge and similar certifications, Robotics Controls Engineers specialize in robotic systems, whereas Automation Engineers work on a wider range of automation solutions.

What does a Robotics Controls Engineer do?

A Robotics Controls Engineer designs, develops, and implements control systems that enable robots to perform specific tasks accurately and efficiently. They work on programming algorithms, integrating sensors, and managing the electrical and mechanical systems that allow robots to move and interact with their environment. These engineers often collaborate with other engineering disciplines to create automated solutions for industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics.

What are common challenges faced by Robotics Controls Engineers when integrating new robotics systems into existing manufacturing environments?

Robotics Controls Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility with legacy equipment, managing communication between diverse hardware and software platforms, and minimizing production downtime during integration. Adapting control algorithms to work seamlessly with existing processes can require significant troubleshooting and customization. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as mechanical engineers and production staff, is crucial to address these challenges and achieve a smooth transition.
