Job description

Overview:

Roasting is a crucial and extremely important step in the journey of a coffee. The Production Roaster continually strives to perfect the art of guiding a coffee along the delicate path to deliciousness. The Production Roaster has the privilege of focusing solely on the coffees we source and by virtue of enthusiastic communication and use of remarkable quality technique to showcase the hard work and individuality of our farming partnerships. The Production Roaster reports to the Roastery Production Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Roast coffee according to established sensory profile, blends, roasting schedule and demands.
  • Maintain Daily Roast, QC, and Cupping reports and logs
  • Maintain focus and attention to detail throughout the roasting process
  • Actively update and utilize Roaster's log
  • Assist with green coffee receiving, organizing, and green coffee inventory
  • Assist with weighing and portioning green coffee for recipes as directed
  • Attend regular Production Cuppings and Espresso Quality Control
  • Assist with weekly Roastery cleaning and machine maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

  • Excellent communication and coaching skills
  • A logical and methodological approach to problem solving
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor at all times
  • Self-directed and independent, with the ability to work closely with team members
  • Ability to work full-time, occasional weekends, and some evenings
  • A demonstrated passion for coffee
  • 1+ years of specialty roasting experience
  • Knowledge of food safety and food processing standards
  • Good sensory perception - smell, hearing, vision, and taste
  • Comfortable using a range of programs, including Cropster, Excel, Word and Filemaker

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, including weekends and shift coverage
  • Frequent holding and grasping with hands
  • Regular use of hand tools - wrenches, screw drivers and mallets
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds with assistance and stand for 8+ hours
  • Ability to maneuver effectively around the roastery, store room, cafe and office
