What is an RFIC?

RFIC stands for Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit. These are specialized semiconductor devices designed to operate at radio frequencies, typically from a few MHz up to several GHz. RFICs are commonly used in wireless communication systems such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi devices, and satellite equipment. They integrate various functions like amplifiers, mixers, and oscillators onto a single chip, making wireless devices smaller, faster, and more efficient.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an RFIC engineer?

To thrive as an RFIC Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, semiconductor physics, and RF circuit design, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with EDA tools like Cadence, ADS, and simulation software, along with knowledge of industry standards, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for designing reliable, high-performance RFICs that meet complex technical specifications and project deadlines.

What challenges do RFIC engineers face when working in cross-functional teams?

RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit) engineers often collaborate with digital, analog, and system engineers throughout the product development cycle. A common challenge is ensuring seamless integration between RF components and other circuitry, as performance can be affected by layout and interference issues. Effective communication and documentation are crucial to align on specifications and resolve technical trade-offs. Additionally, coordinating timelines and testing across disciplines requires adaptability and proactive problem-solving.

What is the difference between Rfic vs RF Engineer?

AspectRficRF Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically an engineering degree, certifications in RF or wireless technologyEngineering degree, specialized certifications in RF/wireless
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and development of RFICs in labs or manufacturingDesign, testing, and troubleshooting RF systems in labs or field
Industry UsagePrimarily in semiconductor and chip manufacturingTelecommunications, wireless, and RF system companies

Rfic professionals focus on designing and developing RF integrated circuits, often within semiconductor companies. RF Engineers work on broader RF systems, including antennas and wireless networks. While both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, Rfic roles are more specialized in chip design, whereas RF Engineers handle system-level design and deployment.

Job description

Are you passionate about designing advanced semiconductor layouts that enable next-generation wireless technologies? At Falcomm, we are transforming innovative semiconductor research into real-world solutions through high-performance, energy-efficient RF power amplifier technologies. Our mission is to deliver cutting-edge wireless solutions that push the boundaries of efficiency, integration, and performance.
Falcomm is seeking a Senior RFIC Layout Engineer to support the physical implementation of RF and mmWave integrated circuits. This role focuses on developing high-quality IC layouts for RF front-end circuits while ensuring compliance with foundry design rules and performance requirements. The position requires close collaboration with RFIC designers, verification teams, and fabrication partners to ensure successful tape-out and silicon performance.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement layout for RF and analog integrated circuits including amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, and supporting RF blocks.
  • Work closely with circuit designers to translate schematics into optimized physical layouts that meet performance and area requirements.
  • Ensure layouts comply with foundry design rules and support design verification processes including DRC, LVS, and parasitic extraction.
  • Optimize layout for RF performance, signal integrity, matching, and noise isolation.
  • Support tape-out preparation and coordinate with fabrication partners during the manufacturing process.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including RF design, packaging, and testing.
  • Document layout methodologies and contribute to best practices for RFIC physical design.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in RFIC or analog IC layout design.
  • Must be willing to work full-time, onsite, in Atlanta, GA.

Preferred Skills:
  • Familiarity with advanced semiconductor processes such as SOI and GaN.
  • Understanding of RF layout techniques including matching, shielding, guard rings, and isolation structures.
  • Experience supporting tape-out and post-silicon validation.

Benefits
  • Competitive Salary and Equity Package
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) and Sick Leave
