As of Jun 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for rf ran in the United States is $117,680.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $97,500.00 and $139,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical challenges faced by RF RAN engineers when optimizing network performance in a live environment?

RF RAN engineers often face challenges such as managing interference, balancing coverage and capacity, and troubleshooting unexpected network issues in real time. Working in a live environment requires quick problem-solving and close coordination with field teams, network operations, and other engineers to minimize downtime and maintain service quality. Adapting to rapidly changing technologies and customer demands also requires ongoing learning and flexibility, making the role both demanding and rewarding.

What are RF RAN engineers?

RF RAN engineers are professionals who specialize in designing, optimizing, and maintaining the radio access network (RAN) components of wireless communication systems. They work with radio frequency (RF) technologies to ensure reliable and efficient wireless coverage and capacity for mobile networks. Their responsibilities include planning cell site locations, configuring network parameters, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and supporting the rollout of technologies like 4G LTE and 5G. RF RAN engineers play a crucial role in delivering high-quality wireless services to end users.

What is the difference between Rf Ran vs Rf Engineer?

AspectRf RanRf Engineer
CertificationsWireless certifications, LTE/5G trainingWireless certifications, LTE/5G training
Work EnvironmentNetwork deployment, site installation, testingNetwork design, testing, troubleshooting
Industry UsageTelecom operators, network providersTelecom companies, network vendors

Rf Ran professionals focus on deploying and maintaining radio access network hardware, including site installation and testing. Rf Engineers typically handle network design, optimization, and troubleshooting. While both roles require similar certifications and work in telecom environments, Rf Ran roles are more hands-on with hardware deployment, whereas Rf Engineers focus on network performance and planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF RAN Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF RAN Engineer, you need strong knowledge of radio frequency (RF) principles, wireless communication standards, and a degree in telecommunications or a related field. Proficiency with RF planning tools (such as Atoll or Asset), drive test equipment, and network management systems is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for optimizing network performance and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills are critical for ensuring reliable wireless network coverage and high-quality service for users.

Job description

Amazon LEO is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.
As an RF RAN Systems Engineer, you will support the integration, validation, and characterization of advanced wireless communication systems

In this role, you will work across RF hardware, wireless protocols, and software-controlled test environments to help evaluate system performance, investigate issues, and improve test coverage and repeatability.
You will be a hands-on contributor working with RF bench equipment, wireless waveforms, protocol-driven validation, and system-level debugging across hardware and software interfaces. The ideal candidate has strong engineering fundamentals, familiarity with 3GPP-based wireless systems, and the ability to translate test objectives into structured execution and clear technical results.
This role is a strong fit for an engineer who enjoys lab work, cross-functional problem solving, and working at the intersection of RF, communications systems, and validation engineering.
Key job responsibilities
- Execute integration and validation test plans for wireless communication hardware, subsystems, and full communication chains.
- Support characterization of RF and communication performance, including waveform quality, link behavior, interoperability, and end-to-end system metrics.
- Operate RF lab equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, power meters, and related instrumentation.
- Collect, analyze, and summarize engineering data for key metrics such as EVM, ACLR, RSRP, RSRQ, SINR, throughput, latency, jitter, packet loss, and related performance indicators.
- Support validation of systems using 3GPP LTE and 5G NR concepts, including familiarity with radio procedures, mobility behavior, and network elements such as gNodeB and eNodeB.
- Troubleshoot issues across RF, protocol, software, and hardware domains; contribute to structured root-cause analysis and debug closure.
- Build, configure, and maintain repeatable lab test setups, procedures, logs, fixtures, and documentation.
- Partner with RF, antenna, systems, software, and test engineers to improve system robustness, debug efficiency, and validation capability.
- Contribute to scripting, automation, or data processing workflows using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
- Present concise technical findings, status updates, and recommendations to cross-functional engineering teams.
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S

permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
About the team
You will join a cross-functional engineering team focused on integration and validation of advanced wireless and RF communication systems. The team works closely with antenna, RF, systems, software, and test engineers to develop scalable test strategies, improve system performance, and ensure robust operation across development and validation environments

We value strong technical judgment, hands-on ownership, clear communication, and a bias for solving difficult cross-disciplinary problems.
