What is retail liquidation?

Retail liquidation refers to the process of selling off a retailer’s inventory, often at discounted prices, to quickly convert assets into cash. This typically happens when a store is closing, relocating, or making room for new merchandise. Liquidation sales can include a wide variety of goods, from clothing and electronics to furniture and appliances. The goal is to sell as much inventory as possible in a limited time frame, often using promotions and markdowns to attract customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in retail liquidation?

To thrive in Retail Liquidation, you need a solid understanding of inventory management, sales analysis, and negotiation, often supported by experience in retail or wholesale environments. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory tracking software, and financial reporting tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help professionals excel in fast-changing markets and customer interactions. These skills ensure effective asset recovery, maximize returns, and facilitate smooth operations during the liquidation process.

Retail Liquidation professionals often encounter challenges such as managing large inventories under tight deadlines and maintaining positive customer relations during clearance sales. The fast-paced environment requires strong organization and the ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities. Successful team members are proactive in communication and problem-solving, often collaborating closely with store management, logistics teams, and external vendors to ensure smooth operations. Building resilience and staying solution-focused can help manage the pressures unique to this role.

Job description

Job Title: Social Media & Sales Specialist – Liquidation Outlet Store

Company: Stus Home Improvement Outlet
Location: Dubuque, Iowa
Job Type: Full-Time (or Part-Time depending on candidate)
Reports To: Store Owner

Job Summary

We are looking for a motivated, creative, and results-driven Social Media & Sales Specialist to drive traffic and sales to our growing home improvement liquidation outlet. You will be the face and voice of our store online by managing Facebook Marketplace ads, creating engaging daily content (photos, videos, and stories), and actively converting online interest into in-store sales.

This is a hands-on role perfect for someone who loves social media, video content, home improvement/DIY products, and closing deals. You will help turn our inventory of appliances, furniture, flooring, tools, and other home goods into fast-moving sales while building an excited local customer base.

Key Responsibilities

Digital Marketing & Content Creation (50-60% of role):

  • Post daily content on Facebook, Instagram, and Marketplace showcasing new arrivals, daily happenings, product highlights, customer transformations, and store atmosphere.
  • Create short videos (Reels, Stories, TikTok-style) of unboxings, product demos, before/afters, customer pickups, and “deal of the day” features.
  • Manage and optimize Facebook Marketplace ads – listing items with compelling photos, descriptions, and pricing to maximize views and inquiries.
  • Monitor messages/inquiries and respond quickly and professionally.
  • Track what content performs best and adjust strategy to increase engagement and foot traffic.

Sales & In-Store Support (40-50% of role):

  • Convert online leads into in-store visits and purchases through follow-up calls, messages, and appointments.
  • Work on the sales floor as needed – greet customers, highlight product features/benefits, negotiate deals, and close sales.
  • Help with light inventory tasks, merchandising, and photo shoots for listings.
  • Meet or exceed weekly/monthly traffic and sales targets set with the owner.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: Previous social media content creation, Facebook Marketplace, or digital advertising experience preferred. Retail sales experience (especially big-ticket items like appliances or furniture) is a big plus.
  • Skills:
    • Strong phone and in-person sales skills – you’re comfortable closing deals.
    • Creative eye for photography and video (iPhone video editing skills are sufficient – CapCut, Reels, etc.).
    • Excellent written communication for ad copy and customer messages.
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Personality: Outgoing, energetic, organized, and customer-obsessed. You should genuinely enjoy home improvement products and sharing great deals.
  • Requirements: Reliable transportation, smartphone with good camera, ability to lift 50+ lbs occasionally, and availability to work some weekends.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive base pay + commission on sales (uncapped earning potential).
  • Opportunity to have real creative freedom and see direct impact on store growth.
  • Work in a fun, fast-paced environment with ever-changing inventory.
  • Be part of a small team where your ideas matter.

Compensation: $ [Base + commission ](discuss in interview based on experience)

To Apply:
Please send your resume and a short video (1 minute or less) introducing yourself and showing an example of a product video or ad you’ve created (or why you’d be great at this)

Tell us why you’re excited about driving traffic and sales for a home improvement liquidation store.

We’re looking to hire quickly – if you love creating content, selling great deals, and helping customers save money on home upgrades, apply today!
