Retail Financial Controller information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Retail Financial Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Financial Controller, you need a strong background in accounting, financial analysis, and budgeting, typically supported by a degree in finance or accounting and a recognized accounting qualification (such as CPA or ACCA). Expertise in financial management software like SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics, along with advanced Excel skills, is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, leadership, and effective communication enable you to manage teams and relay complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure accurate financial reporting, informed decision-making, and compliance within the fast-paced retail environment.

What is a Retail Financial Controller?

A Retail Financial Controller is a senior finance professional responsible for overseeing and managing the financial operations of a retail business. Their duties typically include budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. They work closely with executive teams to support business strategy and help drive profitability. Retail Financial Controllers also analyze financial data to identify trends and recommend improvements, playing a key role in decision-making processes.

Job description

A PE-backed, fast-growing multi-unit fitness franchisee is looking for a Controller to lead their accounting function out of their Richmond, VA headquarters. This is a fully onsite role with direct CFO partnership and real influence over how the finance function scales.

What the role looks like:

You will own month-end close, financial reporting, cash flow management, and the full accounting team. You will partner with the CFO on forecasting and budgeting, and you will bring the process discipline and technical depth a growing, asset-heavy operation demands.

What makes it interesting:

This is not a quiet back-office seat. The company operates 40 locations across nine states and is actively building the financial infrastructure to support continued growth. The lease portfolio is complex, the cost allocation picture is real, and you will be a key voice in how the company reports and plans. A new permanent CFO steps in mid-June -- the person who joins now gets to help shape that relationship from the start.

What they are looking for:

5-7 years in a Controller role (title, not just experience), strong NetSuite proficiency, solid GAAP and accrual accounting fundamentals, lease accounting experience (ASC 842), and a background in multi-unit or asset-heavy environments. Multi-location restaurant, retail, hospitality, or similar backgrounds translate well. Fitness experience is not required. CPA is a plus, not a requirement.
