What is a requirements engineer?

Requirements Engineers are professionals responsible for gathering, analyzing, documenting, and managing the needs and requirements of stakeholders for a project, typically in software development or systems engineering. They act as a bridge between clients, users, and technical teams to ensure that the final product meets all specified requirements. Requirements Engineers use various techniques such as interviews, workshops, and modeling to elicit and communicate requirements clearly. Their work is crucial in reducing misunderstandings, minimizing project risks, and ensuring successful project delivery.

What does a requirements engineer do?

As a requirements engineer, you determine needs in software product design. Your responsibilities are to identify functional requirements using quantifiable data. You analyze that data and translate it into the end user product. You work alongside project management to ensure a company’s systems meet audience or consumer needs. Other duties include communicating with system users to determine requirements, documenting all aspects of the development process, and testing system features for usability. You work with a team of software engineers to complete these tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a requirements engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Requirements Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, domain knowledge, and experience in requirements elicitation and documentation, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with requirements management tools (like IBM DOORS or Jama), modeling languages (such as UML), and relevant certifications (e.g., IREB, CBAP) is highly valued. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and stakeholder management skills help bridge gaps between technical teams and business needs. These competencies ensure accurate, clear requirements that drive successful project outcomes and reduce costly misunderstandings.

How does a requirements engineer typically collaborate with stakeholders during a project's lifecycle?

A Requirements Engineer works closely with stakeholders throughout a project's lifecycle to ensure that business needs are accurately captured, documented, and communicated to the development team. This collaboration involves facilitating workshops, conducting interviews, and leading regular review sessions to clarify requirements and manage changes. Effective communication and negotiation skills are essential, as Requirements Engineers often serve as a bridge between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders. Maintaining clear and up-to-date documentation is a key responsibility, helping to avoid misunderstandings and ensuring project alignment.

What is the difference between Requirements Engineer vs Business Analyst?

Job description

Network Engineer (NE)

Leidos - Cyber & Analytics Business Area, Key Management & Analytics Division,

Your Experience. A Critical Mission. Real Impact.

Leidos has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Network Engineer to join our Cyber & Analytics Business Area, Key Management & Analytics Division, supporting critical national-security missions.

This is an opportunity to apply deep network engineering expertise to complex, mission-critical environments-from designing and optimizing secure networks to deploying communications capabilities, troubleshooting complex problems, integrating emerging technologies, and guiding other network engineers.

You'll work alongside systems engineers, cybersecurity professionals, technical teams, and mission partners to ensure network and telecommunications capabilities are secure, resilient, optimized, and ready to perform when the mission demands it.

This is a full-time, on-site position in a secure mission environment. Due to the nature of the work and security requirements, remote work is not available for this position.

If you're an experienced network engineer who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and wants to see your expertise translate directly into mission capability, we'd like to talk.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Network Engineer, you'll provide senior-level engineering expertise across the network and telecommunications lifecycle-from architecture and design through integration, deployment, operations, optimization, and sustainment.

  • Design, Engineer & Deploy Mission Networks - Design, build, integrate, test, document, and deploy secure network and telecommunications solutions supporting complex mission requirements. Engineer solutions incorporating routing protocols, BGP, policy-based routing, traffic shaping, tunneling, IPsec, NAT, firewall contexts, load balancing, WAN acceleration, and network monitoring, while integrating new technologies as mission needs evolve.
  • Operate, Secure & Optimize Network Infrastructure - Configure, install, maintain, and optimize network and telecommunications infrastructure, including routers, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, cryptographic devices, VoIP, VTC, POTS, and VSAT satellite communications systems. Monitor accredited environments, analyze traffic and TCP performance, minimize latency, maximize throughput, and help ensure the required security and operational posture is maintained.
  • Troubleshoot Complex Network & Telecommunications Challenges - Lead investigation, diagnostics, and resolution of complex network incidents and performance issues. Analyze system logs, traffic characteristics, connectivity, transmission speeds, packet behavior, and throughput; identify root causes and develop, test, document, and implement solutions and workarounds. Assess and apply patches, updates, configuration changes, backup procedures, and corrective actions using approved methods and procedures.
  • Provide Technical Leadership & Mission Integration - Partner with systems engineers, cybersecurity professionals, external Network Operations Centers (NOCs), telecommunications providers, and cross-organizational teams to translate mission requirements into effective technical solutions. Maintain network diagrams and configuration documentation, support Certification and Accreditation (C&A) requirements, and provide technical leadership and guidance to Level 0-2 Network Engineers, validating their work and ensuring approved engineering methods and procedures are followed.

What You'll Bring

This position requires an experienced cybersecurity professional with demonstrated Information Systems Security Officer experience supporting programs and contracts of comparable scope, type, and complexity.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Fifteen (15) years of experience as a Network Engineer on programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university. Five (5) years of experience in Network Engineering disciplines may be substituted for the bachelor's degree.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph and ability to work full-time on site in a secure mission environment.
  • Current Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification in an applicable networking discipline, or an equivalent certification approved by the program.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, configuring, implementing, troubleshooting, and optimizing complex network and telecommunications environments, including routing protocols, BGP, policy-based routing, tunneling, IPsec, NAT, WAN technologies, traffic management, and network performance analysis.
  • Experience configuring, testing, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining enterprise network and security infrastructure, including routers, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, cryptographic devices, and related network technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve complex network and telecommunications problems, develop and document technical solutions, and provide technical guidance and leadership to junior and mid-level Network Engineers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience configuring, administering, troubleshooting, and optimizing Palo Alto Networks firewalls, including security policies, NAT, routing, logging, and traffic analysis.
  • Experience with VoIP, Video Teleconferencing (VTC), POTS, and/or VSAT TDMA IP-based satellite communications systems.
  • Experience performing advanced TCP/IP and network performance analysis, including troubleshooting latency, throughput, packet flow, and end-to-end network performance.
  • Experience supporting accredited network environments, including configuration management, security compliance, and Certification and Accreditation (C&A) activities.
  • Experience introducing, evaluating, and integrating new network and telecommunications technologies into complex operational environments.
