What is a report developer?

Report Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain reports that help organizations analyze data and make informed decisions. They work with various data sources and reporting tools, such as SQL, Power BI, or Crystal Reports, to create visualizations, dashboards, and detailed reports. Their role involves understanding business requirements, ensuring data accuracy, and presenting complex information in an easy-to-understand format. Report Developers often collaborate with business analysts, data engineers, and stakeholders to deliver effective reporting solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a report developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Report Developer, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with reporting tools such as Microsoft SSRS, Power BI, or Tableau, as well as familiarity with database management systems, is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and translating data into actionable insights. These skills ensure accurate, timely, and meaningful reports that support business decision-making.

What are some common challenges report developers face when working with stakeholders to define reporting requirements?

Report Developers often encounter challenges such as translating non-technical stakeholder requests into actionable data requirements and ensuring data accuracy and relevance. Managing expectations around report delivery timelines and navigating ambiguous or evolving business needs can also be difficult. Effective communication and iterative feedback are crucial to clarifying requirements and delivering reports that truly support business decisions.

  • Build and maintain integrations with third-party applications and services through REST APIs and SFTP servers.
  • Develop data models and build data ingestion, automation, and ETL pipelines (e.g., SQL Server to Snowflake).
  • Deliver ticket-based development work, from interpreting technical requirements through implementation, release, and verification.
  • Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines for production updates, including automated build, deploy, and error alerting.
  • Build and maintain automated test suites and perform manual pull-request and code testing.
  • Implement and coordinate application releases, verifying that updates comply with industry standards.
  • Investigate and correct errors, data discrepancies, and production application bugs.
  • Contribute to modernization initiatives, including:

    • Modernized application UI and middleware.
    • Audit logging for edited data.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation for both newly developed and legacy applications.
  • Create and update reports as needed with DBA support.
  • Provide after-hours application and data support for releases and critical production issues as needed.
  • Support company initiatives, such as internal AI solutions and piloting new vendor products.

Crew's qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three (3) years of software development experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of application design principles, software development lifecycle, and modern development practices.
  • Proficiency using source control and formal change-control procedures for production releases.
  • Knowledge of database design, data architecture, and data analysis.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
  • Understanding of cloud computing principles and cloud data platforms.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and assess their impact on existing systems.
  • Ability to investigate and evaluate new technical tools and methods to support the company's goals.
  • Ability to deliver quality code changes and fixes using best practices and methods.
  • Ability to work on multiple development efforts at once as they move through development, test, and approval.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Results-oriented, flexible, and comfortable in a growing, changing company; provides backup for team members when necessary.
  • Demonstrates confidentiality when exposed to sensitive company and employee data as part of programming tasks.

Preferred Experience:
  • C#, ASP.NET, and .NET
  • T-SQL and Microsoft SQL Server (SSMS)
  • JavaScript and HTML
  • Python
  • PowerShell
  • Git and source control workflows (Azure DevOps)
  • REST APIs, SFTP servers, and web services

  • Snowflake or comparable cloud data warehousing
  • CI/CD tooling (e.g., Team City) and automated testing
