Job description

Nelnet is a diversified and innovative company committed to enriching lives through the power of service as a student loan servicer, professional services company, consumer loan originator and servicer, payments processor, renewable energy solutions, and K-12 and higher education expert. For over 40 years, Nelnet has been serving its customers, associates, and communities.

The perks of working at Nelnet go beyond our benefits package. When you join the Nelnet team, you're part of a community invested in the success of each individual. That support comes through in our work, as we are united by our mission of creating opportunities for people where they live, learn, and work.

Nelnet's Tax Credit Services team invests in and syndicates tax equity that finances solar and battery energy storage projects across the country. You will work directly with the team's legal, finance, and tax leaders on the full life of each investment, assisting with diligence and documentation through closing, then ongoing compliance across each project's tax credit recapture period, on behalf of Nelnet and its co-investors.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform legal research and draft memorandums on in-depth technical tax and transactional issues, and provide feedback on developments in federal tax credit law: new bills, IRS notices, and Treasury guidance, and help the team apply them to current and prospective investments.

  • Support due diligence for tax equity investments and syndication, review data rooms, project contracts, debt and equity agreements, and insurance and diligence reports to confirm tax credit eligibility and the propriety of related economics.

  • Draft, review, negotiate, and coordinate execution of investment and project documents, including LLC and other operative agreements, NDAs, engagement letters, and tax insurance policies.

  • Monitor ongoing legal, insurance, lender, and tax and business-related compliance of all tax credit investments, on behalf of both Nelnet and its co-investors.

  • Support entity formation, legal reorganizations, and related structures, in coordination with business team leaders and the internal accounting team.

Annual compensation range for this role is $120,000- $160,000 depending on experience.

This role is based in Lincoln, Nebraska, with a strong preference for candidates who can regularly commute to the Lincoln office. The position follows a hybrid work model requiring a minimum of 24 hours per week in the Lincoln office, with the remaining time eligible for remote work.

Relocation assistance to Lincoln, NE available.

This position offers a hybrid work option. Nelnet values flexibility and understands the importance of work-life integration. Our hybrid work environment allows associates living within 30 miles of an office location to work remotely for part of the week, while also fostering collaboration and team connection through in-office presence three days per week.

Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. To be considered, candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.

EDUCATION:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school required.

  • Admission to practice law, and good standing, in at least one U.S. jurisdiction required.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or Environmental Sciences preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 2+ years (may include job-specific education) of corporate or transactional legal practice, at a law firm or in-house.

  • Tax credit investment, renewable energy project finance, or real estate/fund transaction experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with partnership structures and taxation a plus.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  • Strong legal analytical skills and excellent business judgment; deliver timely, accurate, and practical advice.
  • Highly organized and accountable; manage multiple complex transactions simultaneously in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with strong follow-through.

  • Clear, confident communicator (verbally and in writing) with colleagues at all levels, co-investors, and outside advisors.

  • Broad business knowledge (accounting and tax preferred) and genuine interest in renewable energy and tax-advantaged investing.

  • Work independently, embrace challenges enthusiastically, and look for ways to support the broader Nelnet Tax Credit Services team.

  • Strong values, including a demonstrated commitment to honesty, ethics, and integrity.
